Civil Air Patrol LtC. Larry D. Sidle, of the Great Lakes Region, sent us the sad news about the end of a search for two fly-in attendees:

Civil Air Patrol wings from Kentucky, Ohio and Indiana have been stood down by Air Force Rescue Coordination Center in the search for two men missing since last Saturday. Earlier this afternoon [Sunday], local fishermen reported aircraft debris in an area north of the departure airport, Short Creek and south of the Paris Landing bridge on the eastern shore of Kentucky Lake.

The debris was located in an area previously searched by water and air crews. It is believed that the debris surfaced overnight. With the assistance of local residents familiar with the missing airplane the Civil Air Patrol positively identified the debris as a strut from the missing Citabria aircraft.

Currently divers and boats are searching and dragging the area on Kentucky Lake for other targets.

Incident Command has been transferred from the Civil Air Patrol to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency. Further information can be obtained from TEMA Public Information Officer

During the search the Civil Air Patrol aircrews flew over 280 hours on over 100 sorties covering a search area encompassing nearly 4000 square miles. Certain high probability areas of the grid were covered several times. Incident Commander Kevin Fosberg commented, "the search would not have been possible without the unified efforts from the local residents, Calloway and Henry County Emergency Management and law enforcement agencies, Red Cross, Coast Guard Auxiliary and local businesses who donated food to volunteers including Wal-Mart and Pizza Hut."
