Airborne 05.24.19: Amazon 2 Lakeland, New Boeing?, Apollo 12 LM Impact Site

The Lakeland, FL City Commission has given unanimous approval to a plan that will see an Amazon cargo facility built at Lakeland Linder International Airport (KLAL).

The 20-year deal gives Amazon a 20-year lease on 47.2 acres at the airport. The company plans to build a seven-jet cargo hangar and bring between 800 to 1,000 jobs to the region. Airport director Gene Conrad called the deal "a home run for us." Amazon will pay some $80,000 per month in rent, and 85 cents per 1,000 pounds of cargo landed at the airport. They will also pay a 3-cent per gallon surcharge on fuel purchased at the airport. The deal includes an option to expand on an additional 62 acres of land, with three renewal options that could extend the deal to 50 years. While Boeing is playing it close to the vest, rumors are swirling about its plans to announce its New Midsize Airplane (NMA), perhaps as soon as the Paris Air Show in June. Among the biggest rumored changes in the so-called "797" is the possibility that it will be flown by a single pilot on board, with a second ground-based pilot that would be able to "monitor several aircraft" at the same time. But... a note from analysts indicates that technology allowing for single-pilot operation is still at least 10 years in the future. One of the experiments performed during the Apollo 12 mission in November, 1969 was designed to detect and measure moonquakes. A method used to initiate such a quake was to intentionally crash the spent ascent stage of the Lunar Module back onto the surface of the moon, triggering instruments on the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments Package (ALSEP) placed by Alan Bean and Pete Conrad. But the de-orbit burn lasted longer than planned, and the ascent stage impacted the lunar surface much further from the ALSEP than expected. In fact, no one was quite sure where it went down. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
