Angle Of Attack System Approved For Mitsubishi MU-2

Device Calibrated For All Flap Settings On The Aircraft

The FAA has approved a new Angle of Attack (AoA) system for Mitsubishi MU-2 aircraft.

The Angle of Attack system was developed in cooperation with Alpha Systems AOA.  For the MU-2 turboprop installation, Alpha Systems customized its standard AOA System to incorporate all MU-2 flap settings.  "In cooperation with MHIA, we developed an AOA system that factors flap inputs into our standard pressurized-aircraft AOA configuration," said Mark Korin, CEO of Alpha Systems of Ramsey, MN.  "We were pleased to partner with them on this installation.  This system will provide visual and audio indications of angle of attack for all approach and departure phases of flight.”

"As an aeronautical engineer and former naval aviator, I learned early that an AOA system offers an optimum way to maintain a safe margin above stall." said Rick Wheldon, Vice President of Turbine Aircraft Services, Inc. "According to the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), loss of control remains a major cause of aircraft accidents.  Widespread use of an AOA indicator of this quality and capability would, without doubt, result in a significant reduction in those types of accidents for the MU-2 or any other similar category aircraft."

Ron Renz, President of Alligator, Inc. and flight test engineer for this project, notes that, “The Alpha Systems AOA system for the MU-2 has been calibrated for approach and landing at all flap settings.  Display of AOA above the glare shield means it is always in the pilot’s vision, and the audio warning when AOA is too high will provide an additional safety tool for the pilot even when concentrating outside the airplane during, for instance, a circling approach.  This system will enhance safety of the MU-2 fleet.”

Installation kits are available from the MU-2 Parts Center.  The kits include all necessary components to be installed on an MU-2.
