Luxair Orders Aviation Partners Boeing Split Scimitar Winglets

Devices To Be Installed On Airline's Boeing Next-Generation 737-800s

Luxair Luxembourg Airlines has ordered Split Scimitar Winglets from Aviation Partners Boeing for its Boeing Next-Generation 737-800 aircraft. APB's newest program is the culmination of a five-year design effort using the latest computational fluid dynamic technology to redefine the aerodynamics of the Blended Winglet into an all-new Split Scimitar Winglet. The unique feature of the Split Scimitar Winglet is that it uses the existing Blended Winglet structure, but adds new aerodynamic scimitar tips and a large ventral strake.

"Luxair has always been a valued customer of APB as they have operated with Blended Winglets on all of their Boeing Next-Generation 737 airplanes for over a decade," says Troy Brekken, Aviation Partners Boeing senior director of sales and new business development. "Luxair now becomes the first airline to order this revolutionary upgrade to Blended Winglets for 737-800s configured with a flat aft pressure bulkhead."

Split Scimitar Winglets can now be installed on all Boeing 737-800 and 737-900ER aircraft. All remaining commercial and private variants of the 737 Next-Generation aircraft are scheduled to be certified by May of 2015.

"Luxair is currently working on several fronts to improve fuel efficiency," says Adrien Ney, Luxair group president and chief executive officer. "Equipping planes with this new upgrade constitutes a major step in our CO2 emission and energy consumption reduction scheme. Our three 737-800's will be fitted with the Scimitar Winglets upgrade by March 2015 and this will help to save around 290,700 kg (64,000 pounds) of fuel and reduce CO2 emissions by 915,705 kg (202,000 pounds) over a year."

Since launching the Split Scimitar Winglet program early last year, APB has taken orders and options for 1,657 systems. Over the last 10 years, APB has sold nearly 8,000 Blended Winglet Systems. More than 5,300 Blended Winglet Systems are now in service with over 200 airlines in more than 100 countries. APB estimates that Blended Winglets have saved airlines worldwide 4.5 billion gallons of jet fuel to-date thus eliminating over 47 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
