HH Sheikha Al Maktoum Takes Leonardo’s AW609 Tilt-Rotor Aloft

Yesterday, Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Marwan Al Maktoum, a member of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) ruling family, took the controls of Leonardo’s AW609 tilt-rotor aircraft for a familiarization flight in Philadelphia, USA. This marks the first flight of the AW609 piloted by a female, and additional emphasis was placed on the fact that she hails from the UAE. Ms. Al Maktoum began her aviation adventures at the age of 17 when she enrolled at Oxford Aviation Academy in Mesa Arizona, USA.

Virtual Fly Has Landed At J.A. Flight Training At Aurora Municipal (ARR), Illinois

Earlier this year, Virtual Fly North America showcased its offerings at Sun n Fun 2022, where they sought to provide a full-service experience to flight schools and training centers with flight simulators that were realistic replicas of popular training aircraft. Virtual Fly recently announced that it delivered and installed four simulators at the J.A. Flight Training center in Aurora, Illinois. In its stables, J.A. Phoenix 2 Successfully Transitions from Hover to Wing-Borne Flight

Lilium GmbH, the German Aerospace company developing the VTOL Lilium Jet, announced today that its technology demonstrator, Phoenix 2, has achieved main wing transition—which is to say, the aircraft successfully transitioned from hover to wing-borne flight. From a physics/aerodynamic perspective, transition entails the transference of lift from vertical engine thrust to horizontal, laminar, relative-wind flow over the test vehicle’s wings.

Norse Atlantic Airways, a new long-haul airline that promises affordable fares on transatlantic routes opened for business in March 2021. They expect to create 1600+ jobs in the USA and Europe when its fleet of 15 Boeing 787 Dreamliners are operational, and this will be timed to coincide with the activation of transatlantic routes on 12 August 2022.

Lasers Still A Danger To Pilots

Laser Pointer Problem Persists...

Laser light strikes at airplanes in flight were an occasional and somewhat rare occurrence many years ago, but the trend has been increasing in recent times. As far back as 2016, there were approximately just over 7000 reported laser strikes, and that number seems to decline by 2018 to a low of 5,600 or so.  However, since that time, the number of reported laser strikes have continued to climb, first by 11%, and now triple that to a current high of 9,700 reported strikes for 2021 (see attached graphic).

Forecasters Predict Above Average 2022 Hurricane Season

Government Agency States 65% Chance of Above-Normal Hurricane Activity—With 70% Confidence

Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, are predicting above-average hurricane activity in 2022. If their predictions hold true, this year will be the seventh consecutive, above-average hurricane season. NOAA’s outlook, which extends from 01 June to 30 November, predicts a 65% chance of above-normal hurricane activity, a 25% chance of near-normal hurricane activity, and a 10% chance of below-normal…

B-29 DOC Hangar Celebrates Women’s Contribution To Aviation

A ’Women in Aviation’ exhibit, along with the Kansas Women in Aviation Hall of Fame, is now open inside the B-29 Doc Hangar, Education and Visitors Center in Wichita, Kansas. Approximately 2,000 square feet honors the women who were on the manufacturing and assembly lines, building wartime equipment and serving during a crucial time of need during World War II. The exhibit and hall of fame were made possible thanks to a gift from Spirit AeroSystems, Inc., which has been a founding sponsor of B-29 Doc and Doc’s Friends, Inc., since 2012.

APP Jet Center Acquires FBO At Witham Field (SUA) For Second Location In Florida

Earlier today, APP Jet Center, headquartered in Florida announced that it had taken over the Fixed Base Operator “(FBO) at Witham Field Airport (SUA) in Stuart, Florida. SUA was previously serviced by Atlantic Aviation and Ross Aviation, and the former had moved to occupy the space previously used by the latter. It’s unclear if there is still an independent FBO at SUA, or if APP is now the sole presence there.

NTSB Prelim: Cessna 172

After Being Established On Final For Runway 12l, The Airplane Abruptly Turned To The North And Rapidly Descended

On May 11, 2022, about 1235 mountain daylight time, a Cessna 172N airplane, N73670, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Broomfield, Colorado. The pilot sustained fatal injuries. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 instructional flight. A preliminary review of track data indicated that the airplane departed from the Rocky Mountain Metro Airport (BJC), Broomfield, Colorado. The airplane departed to the southeast and entered the traffic pattern at the Colorado Air and Space Airport (CFO), Watkins, Colorado.
