Zara Rutherford, 19, has officially completed her around-the-world flight and become the youngest woman in history to complete the voyage alone in a small aircraft. Rutherford took her Shark Aero Ultralight around the world in 155 days, or just over 5 months. Zara says she wants to encourage young women to pursue their dreams and reduce the gender gap in aviation as well as in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The Young woman set off from Belgium in August of 2021, heading westward across the Atlantic before stopping by Iceland and Greenland. Shipped to large distributor Avfuel, Shell hopes it will be the first of many, soon to be available at select FBO sites across the U.S. Avfuel purchased the 7,000-gallon payload with carbon credits, offsetting 75 metric tons of CO2 emissions. The Commemorative Air Force kicked off the year with the first General Staff meeting of 2022 by welcoming 5 new members to the organization: Buddy Cooksey, Bob Stenevik, Denise Walker, Gordon Webb, and Erik Zipkin. The General Staff voted to appoint Jordan Brown to the position of Chief of Staff following his 3 years of faithful service. The General Staff is the head of the CAF, filled with often high-flying board members who work with or for similar organizations, including the American Airpower Heritage Foundation, the American Airpower Heritage Flying Museum, and the American Airpower Heritage Museum.

Cadet Program Expands to Another Florida Area Flight School

Vero Beach, Florida flight school Skyborne is the newest addition to the United Airlines Aviate program, a student pilot to first officer pipeline that sees student pilots through a track from their earliest training days to proper airline employment. Skyborne is a part 141 FAA-certified flight school, as many in the Aviate program are. The consistency of timelines, the consistent pilot output, and the often constant cycling of fresh students make them attractive partners for an airline hoping to get its prospective pilots from zero time to 1,500 hours as soon as possible. EH216 Proves Popular in Japan with Sale to Helicopter Charter Company AirX

EHang holding s announced that one of the bigger Japanese air mobility companies, AirX, has placed a pre-order for 50 units of their EH216 AAV, making it the biggest order ever received in-country. The manufacturer has made consistent progress in neighboring Japan, a country that often appears whenever improvements to unmanned and advanced aircraft are on the table. Japan sees the improvement in transportation and freight transport as key to serve their aging population in the coming decades. The pre-order is meant to facilitate AirX's Urban Air Mobility projects in the works, predominately in air taxi service at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka, Japan.

2022 Scholarship to Open in Spring

Avfuel Corporation released the names of the 4 winners of its 2021 shcolarships, announcing that Kenneth Evers, recipient of the AVTRIP Scholarship, would use the $2,000 to become a flight instructor. The other 3 received the Pilot-in-Training Scholarship, each obtaining up to $1,500 for flight training. Emily Castellucci, Griffin Schaffer and Aaron Slatton can each pursue educational improvements and enhancements in the field of aviation. This year marked the 23rd year since the scholarship’s inception, and the 4th since Avfuel expanded the program with additional positions. Applications for the 2022 round will be accepted on the site sometime this spring.

The Sustainable Flight Department Accreditation Program will allow a solid, consistent framework for those looking for simple, industry-standard guidance in pursuing environmental goals. 2022 NBAA-BACE will see the first crop of accredited entities for those submitted prior to March 31. 

Debris Was Consistent With A Nearly Wings Level, Nose Down, High Speed Impact

On November 21, 2021, about 1920 mountain standard time, a Cessna T310R, N310JA, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Chadron, Nebraska. The private pilot and 2 passengers sustained fatal injuries. The personal flight was conducted under the provisions of Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91. The airplane landed at the Chadron Municipal Airport (CDR), dropped off a passenger, and refueled. About 40 minutes later, the airplane departed from runway 30 at CDR in dark night, visual meteorological conditions.

Ground Controlled Approach A radar approach system operated from the ground by air traffic control personnel transmitting instructions to the pilot by radio. The approach may be conducted with surveillance radar (ASR) only or with both surveillance and precision approach radar (PAR). Usage of the term “GCA” by pilots is discouraged except when referring to a GCA facility. Pilots should specifically request a “PAR” approach when a precision radar approach is desired or request an “ASR” or “surveillance” approach when a nonprecision radar approach is desired.
