The aviation community is in mourning... Tragically, on the evening before an airshow in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains, a pilot for the GEICO Skytypers died during a practice run. Andy Travnicek was confirmed as the pilot. He was an Air Force Academy graduate, a 20-year veteran of the Air Force, a commercial airline pilot, and a certified flight instructor. He resided in New Hampshire with his wife, Sandy, also a veteran military pilot.He was the only person on board. Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta Breaks World Record

Claims Title For Greatest Mass Hot Air Balloon Ascent

A new Guiness World Record was set at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta for the “Greatest mass hot air balloon ascent.” The record setting date was October 6, 2019 with 524 balloons launched. Paul Smith, the executive director of the Balloon Fiesta shared a bit of history about the event and what led them to this record breaking day, “Following our launch of 1,019 hot air balloons in 2000, the event’s leadership agreed that Albuquerque really should be the home for this kind of world record, so we started the process of learning how to document the launches,” said Smith.

D-Day Paratrooper Tom Rice Jumps Again For 100th Birthday

Coronado Native Celebrates With The City

Tom Rice turned 100 years old on Sunday, August 15. Not one to settle for a boring birthday party, he celebrated the day by jumping out of the Commemorative Air Force's C-53 D-Day Doll assigned to the Inland Empire Wing based in Riverside, California. “I think the whole city of Coranado was there,” Rice said. “It was a happy day.” Rice was born and raised in Coronado, and still lives in the same house. Rice was joined by a large crowd and fellow D-Day veteran, 97-year-old Dan McBride. D-Day Doll flew in three missions on June 6, 1944 and the next day. It also flew in support missions and wounded evacuations to England.

Crew Gets Ready for Cargo Dragon and Russian Spacewalks

Cargo Transfers Are Still Ongoing Inside The US Cygnus Space Freighter

The Expedition 65 crew is turning its attention to this weekend’s arrival of a US cargo craft and a pair of Russian spacewalks starting several days later. SpaceX is planning to launch its Cargo Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station on Saturday at 3:37 a.m. EDT. It will arrive on Sunday and dock autonomously at 11 a.m. to the Harmony module’s forward international docking adapter packed with new science experiments and crew supplies. NASA TV will broadcast both launch and docking and NASA Flight Engineers Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur will be on duty monitoring the Cargo Dragon’s arrival.

NTSB Prelim: Enstrom 280FX

While Enroute To BTV The Pilot “Smelled Something Burning And Then Observed Smoke In The Cockpit.”

On July 30, 2021, about 1625 eastern daylight time, an Enstrom 280FX helicopter, N36DK, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident near Colchester, Vermont. The commercial pilot incurred serious injuries. The helicopter was operated by Beta Air LLC. as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 business flight. The pilot reported that he departed for a flight from Plattsburgh International Airport (PGB) Plattsburgh, New York to Burlington International Airport (BTV), Burlington, Vermont. While enroute to BTV the pilot “smelled something burning and then observed smoke in the cockpit.”

VFR-On-Top ATC authorization for an IFR aircraft to operate in VFR conditions at any appropriate VFR altitude (as specified in 14 CFR and as restricted by ATC).
