Paul Smith, the executive director of the Balloon Fiesta shared a bit of history about the event and what led them to this record breaking day, “Following our launch of 1,019 hot air balloons in 2000, the event’s leadership agreed that Albuquerque really should be the home for this kind of world record, so we started the process of learning how to document the launches,” said Smith.

Not one to settle for a boring birthday party, he celebrated the day by jumping out of the Commemorative Air Force's C-53 D-Day Doll assigned to the Inland Empire Wing based in Riverside, California. “I think the whole city of Coranado was there,” Rice said. “It was a happy day.” Rice was born and raised in Coronado, and still lives in the same house. Rice was joined by a large crowd and fellow D-Day veteran, 97-year-old Dan McBride. D-Day Doll flew in three missions on June 6, 1944 and the next day. It also flew in support missions and wounded evacuations to England.

SpaceX is planning to launch its Cargo Dragon spacecraft to the International Space Station on Saturday at 3:37 a.m. EDT. It will arrive on Sunday and dock autonomously at 11 a.m. to the Harmony module’s forward international docking adapter packed with new science experiments and crew supplies. NASA TV will broadcast both launch and docking and NASA Flight Engineers Shane Kimbrough and Megan McArthur will be on duty monitoring the Cargo Dragon’s arrival.

The commercial pilot incurred serious injuries. The helicopter was operated by Beta Air LLC. as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 business flight. The pilot reported that he departed for a flight from Plattsburgh International Airport (PGB) Plattsburgh, New York to Burlington International Airport (BTV), Burlington, Vermont. While enroute to BTV the pilot “smelled something burning and then observed smoke in the cockpit.”
