Statement Regarding Nova Scotia Court of Appeal Upholding Decision to Release Flight AC624 Cockpit Voice Recorder

ALPA Canada president Capt. Tim Perry issued a statement in response to the Nova Scotia Court of Appeal upholding a ruling that granted the release of the cockpit voice recorder (CVR) of Flight AC624 to certain parties. This case pertains to an incident where the Transportation Safety Board of Canada report found certain “approach procedures, poor visibility and airfield lighting led to the 2015 collision with terrain of Air Canada Flight 624 at the Halifax/Stanfield International Airport in Nova Scotia.”

Multiple Witnesses Reported That They Observed The Airplane In A Descending Turn

On July 30, 2021, about 0924, a Cessna 150 airplane, N8520G, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Banning, California. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14, Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. A witness, located at the Banning Airport (BNG), reported hearing the airplane in the traffic pattern practicing touch-and-go landings. Multiple witnesses reported that they observed the airplane in a descending turn, however, none of the witness observed the airplane impact terrain.

AD 2021-15-05 Prompted By An In-Service Occurrence Of Loss Of Engine Thrust Control

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all General Electric Company (GE) GE90-110B1 and GE90-115B model turbofan engines. This AD was prompted by an in-service occurrence of loss of engine thrust control resulting in uncommanded high thrust. This AD requires initial and repetitive replacement of the full authority digital engine control (FADEC) integrated circuit (MN4) microprocessor. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective September 13, 2021.

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all The Boeing Company Model 737-8, 737-9, and 737-8200 (737 MAX) airplanes; and certain Model 737-800 and 737-900ER series airplanes. This AD was prompted by the determination that the aft cargo compartment fire suppression capability is reduced if the airplane is dispatched or released with failed electronic flow control of air conditioning packs, as is currently allowed by these airplane models' master minimum equipment lists (MMELs). Surveillance Approach An instrument approach wherein the air traffic controller issues instructions, for pilot compliance, based on  aircraft position in relation to the final approach course (azimuth), and the distance (range) from the end of the runway as displayed on the controller’s radar scope. The controller will provide recommended altitudes on final approach if requested by the pilot.
