Honda Aircraft Company has unveiled a new and upgraded aircraft, the "HondaJet Elite S," at a virtual product launch event themed "Innovation Continues: Elite S." The HondaJet Elite S features several upgrades that expand operational capability and improve flight operation. With an increased maximum takeoff weight of 200 lbs., customers can now fly up to 120 nm further at a higher payload, or take an additional passenger during their typical mission. Additionally, the new avionics features of FAA DataComm and ACARS replace traditional voice commands with text-based messaging to improve the clarity and efficiency of communications. This Year’s Race Will Be An Air Derby Format

Piper is sponsoring a team of dedicated aviators for the 2021 Air Race Classic. The Piper sponsored team, named “Tres Aviadoras” consists of three passionate aviators who seek to inspire and champion women in aviation. This year’s race will be an Air Derby format, where participants are able to choose their own 5-leg, one-day route. Team members, Elise Wheelock, Captain Olga Custodio and Captain Tammie Jo Shults (shown in picture, left to right), will launch their route from Boerne, TX the second week of June. The team will fly a normally aspirated, piston powered, Piper Pilot 100i – the newest addition to the Piper trainer product line up.

Axiom Space has named the commander and pilot of its second commercial mission proposed to fly to the International Space Station -- and announced the proposed crew’s intended research while on orbit. Axiom will compete to fly the Ax-2 mission when NASA announces the next private astronaut mission opportunity. If awarded, Ax-2 will further cement the research opportunities possible for private industry in low-Earth orbit.

Despite Tight Schedules, A Few New Appearances Have Been Added

Our friends at the International Council of AirShows have come through once again... this time with updated scheedules for two highly enriching military jet demonstration programs. In February, the U.S. Air Force F-35A demo team announced a reduction in their 2021 air show schedule due to increased operational requirements and a reported shortage of aircraft engine parts. Late last week, the team announced the addition of four new events to their air show season schedule, a welcome update for the highly sought-after demo.

Rule Updates The Current Records Reporting Process 

Despite concerns over possible abuse of the information collected, a new rule from the FAA will enable the sharing of pilot records among employers in an electronic database maintained by the agency. The final rule for the Pilot Records Database requires air carriers and certain other operators to report pilots’ employment history, training, and qualifications to the database. The rule also requires air carriers and certain operators to review records contained in the database when considering pilots for employment.

Brig. Gen. Edward D. Phelka, Civil Air Patrol’s national vice commander since 2017, is getting yet another promotion — the biggest of his 34 years of service in the U.S. Air Force auxiliary. On May 21, CAP’s Board of Governors selected Phelka to be the volunteer organization’s next national commander and CEO. He will assume command Aug. 26 in a ceremony with Maj. Gen. Mark Smith, current national commander/CEO. Phelka will serve as the organization’s top senior leader for the next three years. During The Forced Landing, The Airplane’S Nose Wheel Landing Gear Impacted A Ditch

On May 14, 2021, at 1500 central daylight time, a Beech A36, N1875W, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Pinckneyville, Illinois. The pilot and passenger were not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to the pilot, while at an altitude of 8,000 ft mean sea level, he noticed the engine oil pressure began to fluctuate. The pilot contacted air traffic control and requested to divert to the nearest airport, which was the Pinckneyville-Du Quoin Airport. Shortly thereafter, the engine began to shake and lost total power.
