Airborne-Unmanned 05.18.21: VoloConnect Unveiled, Canada Drones, uAvionix ping200XR

Volocopter has unveiled its newest aircraft, VoloConnect. This electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft (eVTOL) is designed to connect suburbs to cities and complements the company's existing family of aircraft for the intra-city mission. VoloConnect's hybrid lift and push design is expected to achieve certification within the next 5 years. With the capacity to travel longer distances, VoloConnect joins Volocopter's aircraft family and extends the company's UAM ecosystem coverage to the suburbs. The new aircraft will be integrated into Volocopter's existing portfolio of UAM ecosystem solutions: VoloDrone, VoloCity, VoloPort, and the digital platform, VoloIQ. T

The Cruise Speed Target Of 145 MPH Has Reportedly Been Met, As Well As A Payload Of 1,070 Lb

Bearhawk Aircraft tells us that the first flight of a Bearhawk Companion, their side-by-side two-place aircraft, has taken place. The Companion is a utility aircraft with backcountry flying characteristics. It is derived from the tandem seated Bearhawk Patrol wings and the 4-Place Bearhawk Model 5 fuselage. A design goal cruise speed of 145 mph has reportedly been met, as well as payload target of 1,070 lb. Applies To Converted 950 Shaft Horsepower Supervans

Texas Turbine Conversions, working with Hartzell Propeller, has FAA approval to allow Supervan conversion customers to choose either structural composite props or more economical aluminum props as part of their conversion package. "Now Cessna Caravan owners and operators with the Supervan turboprop conversion can choose between a 110-inch diameter structural composite prop, or the more economical 109.5 diameter aluminum option. Both propellers are four-blade and offer a 60 pound or 25 pound weight savings, respectively, over the original Supervan propeller," said Hartzell Propeller President JJ Frigge.

Rocket Lab Recovers First Stage Following 2nd Stage Failure

First Stage Performed Nominally During The Mission And Did Not Contribute To The Flight Issue

The rocket business can be hard... On May 15, 2021, Rocket Lab experienced an anomaly almost three minutes into the company’s 20th Electron launch. Following a successful lift-off from Launch Complex 1, Electron proceeded through a nominal first stage engine burn, stage separation, and stage 2 ignition. Shortly after the second stage ignition the engine shut down, resulting in the loss of the mission. Rocket Lab continued to receive good telemetry from Electron following the safe engine shutdown on stage two, providing engineers with comprehensive data to review as part of a robust review into the anomaly.

NASA SpaceX Crew-3 Mission to Space Station Now Fully Crewed

Kayla Barron To Serve As A Mission Specialist

NASA has assigned Kayla Barron to serve as a mission specialist for the agency’s SpaceX Crew-3 mission to the International Space Station, which is targeted to launch as early as Oct. 23. This will be the first spaceflight for Barron, who became a NASA astronaut in January 2020 after completing two years of training. NTSB Prelim: Robinson Helicopter R44

The Helicopter Had Been Applying Fungicide All Morning

On May 2, 2021, at 1318 eastern daylight time, a Robinson R-44 helicopter, N4528T, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Wingate, North Carolina. The pilot was fatally injured. The helicopter was being operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 137 aerial application flight. The commercial pilot was spraying fungicide on a wheat field when the accident occurred. According to several witnesses, this was the first time they had observed the northwest portion of the field, which contained multiple power lines, being sprayed via aerial application.

AD: Safran Helicopter Engines, S.A.

AD 2021-08-02 Requires The Replacement Of Certain Critical Parts

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all Safran Helicopter Engines, S.A. (Safran) Arriel 2D and Arriel 2E model turboshaft engines. This AD was prompted by the manufacturer revising the maintenance and overhaul manuals to introduce new or more restrictive airworthiness limitations and maintenance tasks. This AD requires the replacement of certain critical parts before reaching their published in-service life limits, performing scheduled maintenance tasks before reaching their published periodicity, and performing unscheduled maintenance tasks when the engine meets certain conditions.
