Aspen Avionics reports that the Evolution 1000 Primary Flight Display has been selected by manufacturers of the PAL-V, the first flying car. After being the first flying car to get road permission for Europe, PAL-V is now also reportedly the first to finalize the full certification basis with EASA. Based on PAL-V's 10 years of test results, EASA specialist teams finalized the requirements for the PAL-V Liberty including the installation of the Aspen Evolution 1000 PFD. EAA's Kermit Weeks Hangar aircraft technicians, B-17 Aluminum Overcast tour team, and EAA Chapter 690 members showed EAA's can-do spirit over the past few days in getting their B-17 back in the air after a bird strike last Saturday cut short the 2021 tour's very successful inaugural stop at Lawrenceville, Georgia. When the flight crew discovered the apparent bird strike after landing the aircraft following an uneventful flight experience, everyone got to work to fully inspect the aircraft's right wing between the engines, where the strike took place.

One of Aviation's Greatest Organizations Steps Up -- Again

Humanitarian organization Mission Aviation Fellowship (MAF) is delivering COVID-19 vaccines in the land-locked country of Lesotho to help combat the spread of the deadly virus. Lesotho’s mountainous terrain makes interior land travel difficult and MAF is acting as a last-leg carrier to ensure the vaccines stay at the appropriate temperature before being administered. This past week, about 140 workers in Lebakeng and 60 in Kubunyane were vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine, which has been used exclusively in Lesotho.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Air and Marine Operations (AMO) agents and Cochise County Sheriff’s Deputies (CCSO) team up to rescue a stranded hiker from the Huachuca Mountains. On the afternoon of March 22, the AMO Tucson Air Branch received a call from CCSO Search and Rescue requesting air support for a U.S. citizen, solo female hiker stranded with a broken leg in the Huachuca mountains. The hiker was stranded on a hiking trail at over 7500 feet in elevation.

He Smelled “Electrical Fumes” And Noted Smoke In The Cockpit

On March 2, 2021, about 0747 eastern standard time, a Cessna P210N, N4629K, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Johnstown, New York. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot reported that about 30 minutes after climbing to 10,000 ft msl after his departure from Burlington International Airport, Burlington (BTV), Vermont, he started hearing “an unfamiliar buzzing or humming noise” that became increasingly louder. The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all Air Tractor, Inc., (Air Tractor) Models AT-250, AT-300, AT-301, AT-302, AT-400, AT-400A, AT-401, AT-401A, AT401B, AT-402, AT-402A, AT-402B, AT-501, AT-502, AT-502A, AT-502B, AT-503, AT-503A, AT-504, AT-602, AT-802, and AT-802A airplanes. This AD was prompted by reports of cracks in the flap torque tube actuator attachment brackets that may cause the flap actuator to detach from the flap torque tube. AD: Rockwell Collins, Inc. Flight Display System Application

AD 2021-05-17 Prompted By Conflict Between The TCAS Display Indications And Aural Alerts

The FAA is superseding Airworthiness Directive (AD) AD 2019-12-09 for certain Rockwell Collins, Inc. (Rockwell Collins) FDSA-6500 flight display system applications installed on airplanes. AD 2019-12-09 imposed operating limitations on the traffic collision avoidance system (TCAS). AD 2019-12-09 was prompted by conflict between the TCAS display indications and aural alerts that may occur during a resolution advisory (RA) scenario. This AD retains the requirements of AD 2019-12-09 until a software upgrade is completed. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products. This AD is effective April 29, 2021.

Execute Missed Approach

Instructions issued to a pilot making an instrument approach which means continue inbound to the missed approach point and execute the missed approach procedure as described on the Instrument Approach Procedure Chart or as previously assigned by ATC. The pilot may climb immediately to the altitude specified in the missed approach  procedure upon making a missed approach. No turns should be initiated prior to reaching the missed approach point. When conducting an ASR or PAR approach, execute the assigned missed approach procedure immediately upon receiving instructions to “execute missed approach.”

We also got great support from everyone on the airport, which allowed us to fully repair the minor damage to the wing and put the airplane back on tour."
