President Announces Intent to Nominate Bill Nelson for NASA Lead

Not Very Popular Among Some in The Astronaut Corps, Nelson Nom Is Seen (By Many) As Troublesome

President Biden has announced his intent to nominate Bill Nelson to serve as National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Administrator -- the decision is not expected to be popular among much of the elder Astronaut corps who dealt with him during his politically motivated space flight -- which was often considered to be an ill-conceived PR stunt. Senator Bill Nelson, former U. S. Senator, is a fifth generation Floridian whose family came to Florida in 1829. He has served in public office over four decades, first in the state legislature and U. S. Congress, then as State Treasurer. He was elected three times to the United States Senate, represen

Surprise! FAA Experiences 50% Drop in New Registrations and Renewals

Registrations Fell From 1,746,248 To 868,421 Between December 2020 And March 2021

The folks at the Academy of Model Aeronautics tell us that the FAA has experienced a precipitous 50% decline in new registrations and renewals for UAS via faadronezone.faa.gov. The total number of registrations fell from 1,746,248 to 868,421 between December 2020 and March 2021, comprising 492,492 recreational fliers and 375,929 commercially registered drones. The FAA attributes this drop to registrations to reaching the end of their three-year expiration date, though dissatisfaction with the current processes and a number of anti-model aviation decisions may also have an impact on this issue.

Accident(s) Waiting To Happen: Frequency Allocation-Growing Concern for Aviation

"This Is Undoubtedly An Aviation Safety Matter..."

Recent concerns expressed by GA groups over jamming of essential GPS signals for the purpose of military exercises and testing spotlights a growing set of issues surrounding how radio frequency spectrum is controlled to maintain aviation safety, according to EAA's advocacy team. Aero-associations, last week, focused on intentional military jamming of GPS signals as part of training exercises over broad regions of airspace, but aviation groups have also been regularly alarmed by the increasing handover of frequency spectrum to commercial interests without regard for aviation safety.

AD: Leonardo S.p.a. Helicopters

AD 2021-05-13 Prompted By Two Reported Failures Of The Tail Plane Installation Forward Bolts

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for Leonardo S.p.a. (Leonardo) Model AW189 helicopters. This AD was prompted by two reported failures of the tail plane installation forward bolts (bolts). This AD requires inspecting the bolts and depending on the results of those inspections, removing certain parts from service or installing a tail plane retromod. This AD also requires torqueing certain part-numbered nuts, inspecting bolts and nuts for wear, and depending on the results of those inspections, removing parts from service.
