FAA Proposes Medical Requirements for Balloons

Commercial Hot-Air Balloon Pilots to Require Medical

The FAA has proposed a rule requiring commercial hot-air-balloon pilots to hold a medical certificate when operating for hire. Similar to other commercial pilots, they would need a second-class medical certificate. Under current regulations, lighter-than-air aircraft pilots do not require the same medical certification process that others do, only required to affirm that they have no medical defect that would make them unable to pilot a free balloon. “Balloon pilots are responsible for the safety of their passengers," FAA Administrator Steve Dickson said. “This proposed rule would ensure that balloon pilots meet the same medical requirements as pilots of other commercial aircraft.&rd

Update to PTS May Eventually See Light of Day

The FAA has updated the ACS Working Group with the agency’s plan to publish future updates, after a period of pause that left some instructors wondering if they would ever come to be. The private pilot and commercial pilot Airman Certification Standards were completed years ago, but up to now, no further developments have occurred due to administrative disputes in the publication process. SpaceX and NASA Delay Impending Launch

“Not A Medical Emergency And Not Related To Covid-19,” NASA Says

The upcoming Crew-3 launch has been postponed once again, with NASA citing a minor medical issue with an unspecified astronaut. The flight was to take place aboard a SpaceX Crew Dragon launched from their Falcon 9 rocket on October 31, when it was postponed citing a large storm system. The issue now, NASA affirmed in a statement, is not related to Covid-19, nor any serious medical problem that would preclude the launch in the near future. The astronaut crew will remain in quarantine at the Kennedy Space Center until the mission begins. The launch is now scheduled for November 6, 2021 from Cape Canaveral in Florida.

EMS Helicopter Operator Augments Bell Fleet

Already owner of 4 Bell 429s and 5 407 GXis, Life Flight Network has signed a purchase agreement for 12 of Bell’s newest 407GXi. An IFR-certified platform that can seat 6 passengers (in stock trim), travel almost 340 nm of range, and hit a top speed of 133 knots opens possibilities for aerial EMS response. The Network is the largest not-for-profit air medical transport service, with 25 rotor-wing bases, and 9 fixed-wing bases across the Pacific Northwest and Intermountain West. They chose the 407GXi in part for its IFR capabilities, allowing operations in conditions that could ground other aircraft, not uncommon in the Pacific region.

Rostec State Corporation’s new novice parachute, the Cadet-75, is a round canopy training system to allow each step of the deployment process to be manually actuated. The lack of automatic deployment is designed to focus students on learning proper techniques. With demarcation between phases of deployment, students can attentively practice separation from the aircraft and freefall skills. NTSB Prelim: Cessna P210

Rolled Left And Reached An Inverted Attitude Before It Impacted Nose First

On October 8, 2021, about 1311 eastern daylight time, a Cessna P210N, N128EE, was destroyed when it was involved in an accident at Dekalb-Peachtree Airport (PDK), Atlanta, Georgia. The pilot, and three passengers were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Review of PDK airport security surveillance video revealed that the airplane lifted off about 1,000 ft down runway 21 in a nose-high attitude. The airplane then rolled left and reached an inverted attitude before it impacted nose first beside the runway.

Aero Linx: The Caterpillar Club On April 19, 1919, Leslie Leroy Irvin made the world’s first premeditated freefall parachute descent using a rip cord, rather than using a canister or tether line attached to the aircraft to pull open the parachute. Working with the U.S. Army’s Air Service parachute research team, Irvin made the historic jump from a plane over McCook field near Dayton, Ohio.
