Civil Air Patrol Buys 17 More Cessnas

Order Comprises 11 Skyhawk 172S, 5 Skylane 182T, And 1 Turbo Stationair HD T206HD

The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) has purchased another 17 Cessna piston engine aircraft. Using fiscal year 2020 funds, the CAP agreed to purchase 11 Skyhawk 172S, five Skylane 182T and one Turbo Stationair HD T206HD aircraft. The aircraft will join a fleet of nearly 550 Cessna aircraft currently owned and operated by the CAP. "From search and rescue, to disaster relief and homeland security, the missions the CAP undertake daily are as broad as their footprint across the U.S. We are honored that Cessna aircraft continue to be the organization's platform of choice for these crucial operations," said Bob Gibbs, vice president, Special Missions Sales.

AMA Files A Remote ID Progress Report

'Remote ID' Has Been a Major Concern For The Model Aircraft Community

The Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) Government Affairs team continues to work toward advocating for a more-inclusive solution to Remote ID. AMA has been providing sensible recommendations for the hobbyist community to comply with Remote ID since this process started in 2017. The FAA is currently in the process of reviewing more than 50,000 comments that were submitted to the Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPRM). "We were told that the recreational community had a large impact during the comment period and there were many identified issues with the rule that will need better solutions, which include cost, broadcast abilities, and FAA Recognized Identification Areas."

The Southeast Missouri State University Board of Regents has approved a new Professional Pilot Bachelor of Science. The program now goes to the Missouri Department of Higher Education and Workforce Development for review. Southeast hopes to begin implementing the program and admitting students in August with the program expected to launch in fall 2021. “This is an outstanding opportunity for the University to stay on the leading edge of academic program innovation and to grow our enrollment,” said Dr. Carlos Vargas, president of Southeast Missouri State University.

X-57 Has Been Modified From A Tecnam P2006T Airplane

Significant progress is being made in preparation for NASA’s first all-electric X-plane, the X-57 Maxwell. As NASA completes tasks for X-57’s functional ground testing at its Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California, working toward taxi testing and first flight, assembly and qualification tests are underway on two critical components of the X-57 vehicle at NASA’s prime contractor for the project, Empirical Systems Aerospace, or ESAero, of San Luis Obispo, California. These components include the electric cruise motors, which will power X-57 in flight, and the future high-aspect ratio wing that will fly on the aircraft in X-57’s final configuration.

Engine Experienced A Sudden Total Loss Of Power

On May 26, 2020, about 1430 eastern daylight time, a Piper PA-24-250, N5948P, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near South Boston, Virginia. The private pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot stated that he performed a preflight inspection of the airplane before the intended 20 to 25 minutes flight, which included a check of each wing fuel tank sump drain and also the gascolator with no contaminants found. AD 2020-12-02 Requires Re-Identifying Affected EC120B Tail Rotor Blades

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all Airbus Helicopters Model EC120B helicopters. This AD was prompted by a report that a changed manufacturing process for the tail rotor blades (TRB) was implemented, affecting the structural characteristics of the blades and generating a new part number for these blades. This AD requires re-identifying each affected TRB having a certain part number and serial number and establishing a life limit for the new part numbers. This AD also prohibits installation of any affected TRB identified with the old part number on any helicopter. The FAA is issuing this AD to address the unsafe condition on these products.
