Helping Neptune Find Its Paperwork

Forest Service Promises To Pay For Data On Lockheed P-2V Tankers

One of the reasons 33 vintage firefighting tankers were grounded by the Forest Service earlier this year was that, in many cases, owners just couldn't come up with the maintenance records for their aircraft. Now, at least one major player in the tanker wars is getting some help from the feds.

Oh, Deer (Revisited)

FAA Grants Help Texas Airport Build Fence

It was a very near thing last week. A group of Kansas wildlife officials flying into Topeka aboard the agency's Cessna 421 hit a deer on the runway. Luckily, no one was hurt and the aircraft was only slightly damaged. Even the deer apparently survived. But it's the kind of accident that could happen to any pilot at any time.

Big O Memories 2004

Wrapping Up Oshkosh

Favorite Airplane: No matter who performs at EAA Oshkosh AirVenture, my heart is consistently stolen by the AV-8B Harrier. Watching about 20 tons of aircraft hovering on "a column of noise" (thanks to ANN newbie Chris Armstrong for that description) is mind-blowing. There’s a feeling of watching the laws of physics being broken.

Aero-News Quote Of The Day (08.09.04)

"[T]he Forest Service request for information on June 2nd didn't request operational service life reports from Lockheed. They asked for this 10 days ago. Our point is there's no reason we can't be operational in the meantime." Source: Neptune President Kristen Schloemer, after Montana's lone Congressman, Denny Rehberg, announced a deal with the Forest Service to have the government pay for a search of Lockheed records on the P-2V. Before Neptune can fly the vintage military aircraft on aerial firefighting missions again, the Forest Service wants to see a report written when the type was first developed in 1949 which projects the Orion's life cycle.
