ANN Note: In opposition to the proposal set forth this morning by the ATA, on behalf of the airline community, three prominent GA/BizAv organizations have published proposals of their own. No matter which way one feels on the issue, the matter seems destined to divide an already embattled industry down the middle... between the airlines' cry for GA to pay more for the services they contend it owes to the system, and a GA world that argues that the system was designed for the airlines and that much of the costs needed to support it have nothing to do with what they need... or use.

Calls For "Retirement" Of 5,000+ Crankshafts

Two-hundred-million dollars. That's the current price tag on Textron/Lycoming's effort to, in the company's words, "proactively retire" thousands of engines with potential crankshaft problems. Now, Lycoming has announced yet another bulletin -- SB 569, which calls for replacement of over 5,000 crankshafts on engines ranging from the O-360 to the IO-720.

NTSB Calls For Terrain Collision Avoidance Systems For All 6+ Pax Turbine Helis

NTSB has called on the FAA to require all U.S.-registered turbine-powered helicopters certificated to carry at least 6 passengers to be equipped with a terrain awareness and warning system. The recommendation is one of five contained in the final report of a fatal helicopter accident in the Gulf of Mexico.
