Used to describe aircraft speeds that are very near the speed of
sound. An aircraft traveling at transonic speed is usually
traveling at more than Mach 0.8 but less than Mach 1.2 -- air is
flowing faster than sound over some of the parts of the
aircraft.
"This is about paying your fair share... If I were a GA
pilot, I'd be afraid of gridlock. When gridlock comes, we'll have
to slow things down because of safety. That could spell an end to
the first-come, first-served system we know today. In a gridlock
scenario, a plane carrying three hundred people is going to trump
one carrying three."
