With the shuttle program under the world's microscope as it
returns to flight, why did NASA engineers start the countdown
without checking the external fuel tank’s sensors? Those
sensors were already pegged as problematic when NASA delayed the
launch in April. The answer: engineers said they were comfortable
that the issue was nothing more than an “unexplained
anomaly.”
The launch of NASA's Space Shuttle Return to Flight mission,
STS-114, will take place no earlier than Saturday, July 16 at 2:40
p.m. EDT. Space Shuttle Discovery's liftoff, Wednesday, from NASA's
Kennedy Space Center, Fla., was postponed at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
A NASA-funded astronomer has discovered a world where the sun
sets over the horizon, followed by a second sun and then a third.
The new planet, called HD 188753 Ab, is the first known to reside
in a classic triple-star system.
Data from Deep Impact's instruments indicate an immense cloud of
fine powdery material was released when the probe slammed into the
nucleus of comet Tempel 1 at about 10 kilometers per second (6.3
miles per second or 23,000 miles per hour).
