'Space Junk' Growing Issue For AF Space Operations

More And Smaller Objects Orbiting Earth That Could Damage Spacecraft

Members of the 1st and 7th Space Operations Squadron took notice when an upper stage Russian rocket disintegrated in low earth orbit Oct. 16. The break up introduced an estimated 500 pieces of debris into an area where the U.S. operates a multitude of satellites, further congesting an already crowded orbit around Earth.

Twin Grace Follow-On Satellites To Investigate The Earth's Gravity Field

European space technology company Astrium has been commissioned to build two new research satellites for NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, CA. The agreement was signed Friday in Friedrichshafen, Germany.
