Walmart Applies For Permission To Test Delivery UAVs

Seeks Section 333 Exemption To Conduct Outdoor Tests

Walmart has applied to the FAA for a Section 333 exemption that would allow the retail giant to test UAVs that would deliver items to customers in the parking lot, or at their homes.

USA Today reports that Walmart has been conducting tests indoors, but now wants to move those tests outside. To do that, they need the exemption.

Company spokesman Dan Toporek says that Walmart wants to create "a more efficient supply chain." He said the company is set to begin testing outdoors as soon as FAA approval is granted.

According to their application, Walmart wants to test whether UAVs can be used to transport items from a warehouse to a location in a parking lot accessible to customers, as well as home delivery in residential neighborhoods. It has also asked for permission to test the aircraft for surveillance of buildings and parking lots.

Walmart says it will use DJI aircraft manufactured in China, according to the filing.
