Rough Water Delays Salvage Of Groom's Aircraft

Memorial In Planning Stages

Four days after his Sukhoi SU-31 crashed a half-mile from shore in Fort Lauderdale (FL), the wreckage of Ian Groom's aircraft was recovered Tuesday.

Stormy weather and rough seas delayed recovery of the aircraft as the Air and Sea Show went on in Groom's honor over the weekend.

Groom was practicing a flat-spin Thursday when he failed to recover and slammed into the ocean. Groom, 58, was pulled from the water. He was pronounced dead a short time later.

Some aviation experts have been quoted in the general media as saying Groom might have blacked out during the flat-spin maneuver.

The NTSB and the FAA are investigating Groom's death. He had performed at the Air and Sea Show every year since its inception.

Groom was buried Tuesday in Naples (FL).
