Airborne 12.12.18: BBJ 777X!, Lunar Landing Checklist, R66 Cargo Hook

Also: Virgin Orbit Update, FAA-Super Bowl LIII, Gone West: WASP Alma Fornal, Skydiving Hall Of Fame

Could this be ANN’s next corporate aircraft? Boeing Business Jets is launching the BBJ 777X, a new Boeing Business Jet model that can fly more than halfway around the world without stopping, farther than any other business jet.

Customers can choose between two models: the BBJ 777-8 and BBJ 777-9. The BBJ 777-8 offers the longest range of 11,645 nautical miles. The BBJ 777-9 provides a larger cabin, while still offering ultra-long range of 11,000 nautical miles. This model opens up almost unlimited interior design options to ensure comfort for long distance travel. An anonymous American collector has purchased the checklist used by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin for landing on the moon. The document, signed by Aldrin, went for $62,500 at Sotheby's. The Lunar Surface Checklist traveled to the surface of the Moon 50 years ago. "It records the steps that they were to follow before they stepped out on the lunar surface," explained Sotheby's vice president and senior vice president for books and manuscripts Cassandra Hatton. But that was not the most expensive Apollo 11 artifact to go under the gavel. An unnamed American collector paid $75,000 for a Flight Plan Sheet for the mission used by Neil Armstrong. On 8 November 2018, Transport Canada approved Robinson’s R66 cargo hook installation, providing Canadian commercial lift operators with a high performance, low cost solution giving them a leg up on the competition. The optional cargo hook carries external loads up to 1200 lb., and the R66’s maximum gross weight increases from 2700 lb. to 2900 lb. The cargo hook installation allows solo flight from either front seat. Optional extra-large bubble windows enable the pilot to view the load for precision placement. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
