Airborne 10.11.22: EPA v Aviation, Compton Abbas Sold, R66 NVGs

The EPA has proposed to declare emissions from piston-engine aircraft operating on leaded fuel a danger to public health. Emissions from the 190,000 U.S. general aviation airplanes operating on leaded fuel account for about seventy percent of the lead entering the atmosphere, according to U.S. government estimates—which are renowned for their accuracy, impartiality, and freedom from politicization (NOT!). The folks that run the idyllic Compton Abbas Airfield have confirmed that it has been sold by the Hughes family to Ashcombe Estates Ltd, owned and operated by movie icon, Guy Ritchie. The new owners will occupy the airfield from the 1st February 20

HondaJet Elite Gets Even More Elite

Performance Upgrade Will Increase The Maximum Takeoff Weight By 200 Pounds

There is a new "Upgrade Package for the HondaJet Elite." The package offers current HondaJet Elite owners the opportunity to implement Honda Aircraft Company's latest performance and avionics software upgrades on their aircraft. The Upgrade Package for the HondaJet Elite, presented by the Advanced Performance Modification Group, will be available as an upgrade for the HondaJet Elite model. The performance upgrade will increase the maximum takeoff weight by 200 pounds. This performance upgrade allows customers to fly up to 120 nautical miles further at a higher payload or take an additional passenger.

World War II Veteran Dick Miralles slid into the gunner’s seat of the SBD Dauntless Dive Bomber almost as easily as he did 80 years ago in the South Pacific. Miralles, 98, was reliving his wartime experience in a restored SBD operated by CAF Airbase Georgia in Peachtree City, Ga. Miralles flew in the rear, or gunner, seat of SBDs in Guadalcanal in 1943. He survived the war front and supported flight testing in Hawaii until he returned to civilian life, serving for 30 years with the California Department of Forestry (now known as CAL FIRE).

NTSB Prelim: Champion Aeronca 7AC

Airplane Did Not Appear To Climb, Descended, Turned Left, And Rolled Onto Its Left Side

On September 19, 2022, about 1348 central daylight time, a Champion Aeronca 7AC airplane, N2716E, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Bridgetown, New Jersey. The pilot and pilot-rated passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. According to a witness, located near the departure end of runway 18 at Bucks Airport (00N), he heard an airplane departing runway 18 that sounded “unusual.”

ANN's Daily Aero-Term (10.11.22): Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS)

Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) Landing System (GLS) A type of precision IAP based on local augmentation of GNSS data using a single GBAS station to transmit locally corrected GNSS data, integrity parameters and approach information. This improves the accuracy of aircraft GNSS receivers’ signal in space, enabling the pilot to fly a precision approach with much greater flexibility, reliability and complexity. The GLS procedure is published on standard IAP charts, features the title GLS with the designated runway and minima as low as 200 feet DA. Future plans are expected to support Cat II and CAT III operations.
