Airborne 09.09.20: Jetpacks at LAX?, XP-82 Twin Mustang, Canada Mask Fines

Also: Erickson Takes Bell 214 Series, RC Fest 2020 Cancelled, Embraer Cuts, Coast Guard Rescues Pilot

The recent reports by two airline pilots in LAX airspace of a man flying a jetpack at 3000 feet are not technically feasible, at this point, says Jetpack Aviation's David Mayman... an experienced jetpack pilot and innovator. For the record, David is stuck in Australia, in quarantine, so this is not an attempt to evade responsibility, as he was thousands of miles away and all his jetpacks and pilots are otherwise accounted for... Our recent discussions with David suggest him to be a straight shooter. "The technology is just not there yet," he noted. One of the most extraordinary people in aviation, is rarely heard of in non-warbird circles. His name is Tom Reilly. I wat

Beating COVID-19, 2020 New York Int’l Air Show Perseveres

Drive In Program a Big Success And A 'Model For The Era Of Social Distancing'

The New York International Air Show took place last week at Orange County Airport in Montgomery, New York. The event featured an all-star Air Force line up including the Thunderbirds, F-22 Raptor Demo Team and F-35 Lightning II Demo Team. This year’s event was converted to a Drive In format just three weeks ago to comply with New York State Health Department Regulations. Show officials worked with the leadership at Orange County Government to create and submit a plan in early August after Governor Cuomo said he would be willing to consider allowing the event to take place if it was held as a Drive In. The event was moved from New York Stewart International Airport,

FAA Proposes $247,000 Civil Penalty Against the Collings Foundation

Alleges The Conduct of Unauthorized P-51 Flights

It's not been a good year for the Collings Foundation... The U.S. Department of Transportation’s FAA has proposed a $247,000 civil penalty against the Collings Foundation of Stow, Mass., for allegedly conducting unauthorized flights in a P-51D Mustang airplane. The Mustang in question is a limited category aircraft, and FAA regulations prohibit charging people for flights in this category of aircraft. The FAA alleges that between Jan. 17, 2020 and Jan. 30, 2020, the Foundation improperly operated the Mustang on 26 flights carrying people it had charged for flight training. The FAA alleges that before the operations occurred, FAA inspectors advised the Foundation that such flights would violate

As Expected... I/ITSEC Goes Virtual

IITSEC Becomes vIITSEC

The National Training and Simulation Association (NTSA) is happy to announce a new virtual event called vIITSEC, which is scheduled to take place November 30 - December 4, 2020. The event theme, "The Future is Now," could not be more appropriate. NTSA is developing a virtual platform that will enable the training and simulation community to gather in support of developing new training and education systems that will support warfighters, first responders, and our National Security. "It is clear to me that the warfighters are not getting a year off, so neither could the I/ITSEC mission," said RADM James Robb, NTSA's president. I/ITSEC 2020 was canceled for safety concerns amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

This AD requires a rotating probe test of the fastener holes at FR43 on the LH and RH sides for any cracking, and on-condition actions if necessary, as specified in a European Uni
