FAA Puts Kibosh On Sheriff's Shooting Range

Holster That Weapon!

The Laurens County Sheriff's Department won't be teaching women how to use firearms for awhile -- at least, not at the pistol range near the W.H. "Bud" Barron Airport in Dublin, Georgia (KDBN). So says the FAA.

"It breaks my heart because we've had so many folks that wanted to come in and do the firearms classes," Sheriff Bill Harrell tells the Dublin Courier-Herald. "I called (Sen.) Saxby Chambliss and (Rep.) Jim Marshall and tried to get something worked out to try to get it approved until we could get to the end of our classes, but it didn't work."

Harrell says his office had a verbal agreement with the FAA to operate the range near the airport, but the FAA rescinded, saying the range, built in an old barrow pit about a year ago, is simply too close to aircraft operations.

"Your liability is so great out here," Airport Manager Fred Houston tells the Courier-Herald.

The FAA has yet to comment on the matter. Sheriff Harrell is now looking at another property, hoping to resume classes as soon as he can build another shooting range.
