Tuskegee Airman Found Deceased In His Home

Wilfred Defour Was 100 Years Old

Another member of the storied Tuskegee Airmen has Gone West. Wilfred Defour, aged 100, passed away at his home in Harlem Saturday.

The Hill reports that Defour was one of those attending a ceremony in Harlem in November when the post office in Harlem was renamed the Tuskegee Airmen Post Office Building. Defour had worked for the USPS for 30 years after retiring from the military.

Defour had been an aircraft technician. "We didn't know we were making history at the time,” he said during the renaming ceremony. “We were just doing our job.”

Defour is credited with painting the tails of the squadron's airplanes red, which led to the nickname "Red Tails." Police say no foul play is suspected in his death.
