Alaska State Troopers reported that noted bush pilot, television personality, aviation executive, and long-time Alaska resident Jim Tweto (68) lost his life in an as-of-yet poorly understood aircraft accident in the vicinity of Shaktoolik, Alaska. One of the earliest intact BF-109s is up for grabs from Platinum fighter sales. The 1938 Messerschmitt BF-109E-1 started its career with the Condor Legion in Spain, flying with their Air Force through 1950. It was discharged from official SAF service then, flying as a trainer through 1958. The aircraft made its way into its current owner’s hands in 1981. The US Senate’s FAA Reautho

OSHA Fines Piedmont Airlines $15K After Ramp-Worker’s Death

Optics and the Worsening Immateriality of Fact

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has fined Piedmont Airlines, a wholly-owned subsidiary of American Airlines, $15,625 in the wake of a horrific, December 2022 accident in which a ramp worker was killed on the job. In addition to instantiating the maximum dollar-amount permitted under law, the penalty levied by OSHA is sharply contraindicated by empirical evidence collected and reported upon by the NTSB.

VoltAero Unveils Cassio 330 Prototype

Of Promising Aircraft and Unfortunate Appellations

VoltAero, the French aerospace concern founded by former Airbus chief technical officer Didier Esteyne, unveiled the first prototype of its Cassio 330 electric-hybrid Short Take-off and Landing (STOL) aircraft during an 18 June press conference at 2023’s Paris Air-Show. The first Cassio 330 prototype, somewhat unimaginatively dubbed no. 1, is slated to undertake its maiden flight in late 2023. The test aircraft will be powered by a four-cylinder Kawasaki reciprocating engine and serve to validate airframe performance, robustness, and aerodynamic efficiency. Prototype no. 1 will be followed, predictably, by no. 2.

Aero-TV: Super Petrel XP to Supersede LS Model as Scoda Flagship

Brazilian Bird U.S. Bound

An evolution of the company’s 2002-vintage Super Petrel, the new Rotax 915is-powered amphibious seaplane conforms—ostensibly—to the FAA’s LSA regulatory requirements. Scoda’s confidence in the design is evinced by the fact the plane-maker has set forth the XP is to replace the legacy Super Petrel LS as its flagship model.

Pilot Standards Stall Senate Committee on FAA Reauthorization

With September 30th Deadline in the Distance, Lawmakers Bog Down at the Starting Line

The US Senate’s FAA Reauthorization Act of 2023 saw friction out of the gate in Committee, with disagreements over changing PIC requirements for air carriers. The looming pilot shortage (long prophesied but probably real this time) has spurred renewed debate as to exactly how much experience pilots should be required to have. Currently, both the House and Senate have their own versions of a possible FAA Reauthorization bill, which will ultimately morph into a relatively bipartisan combination of both as the details are hammered out in their respective houses.
