Airborne 08.31.22: Red Arrows v Bird, Mesa $$$, Gogo 5G Network

The British Royal Air Force’s Red Arrows aerobatic team was forced to cut short its performance at the Rhyl Air Show on 28 August 2022 when squadron leader Gregor Ogston was forced to break away from a formation after a bird impacted and shattered the canopy of his BAE Hawk T1A aircraft. Witnesses on the ground reported hearing a “loud pop” as bird and plane collided. Video images of the incident depict the crimson jet passing through a small constellation of aircraft debris and bloodied feathers with Ogston hunkered down behind the remains of his canopy. Gogo is building the world’s first 5G network exclusively for business aviation and as of today, 121 of 150 planned towers are LIVE. Completion is expected before the end of the year.

Slight Delay... NASA, SpaceX Adjust Crew-5 Launch Date

Space-Age Traffic Jams Cause A Few Days Additional Wait Time

NASA and SpaceX are targeting no earlier than 12:45 p.m. EDT Monday, Oct. 3, for the launch of the agency’s Crew-5 mission to the International Space Station. The date adjustment allows for extra separation with spacecraft traffic coming to and from the space station. Crew-5 will carry two NASA astronauts Mission Commander Nicole Mann and Pilot Josh Cassada, along with JAXA (Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Koichi Wakata and Roscosmos cosmonaut Anna Kikina, who will serve as mission specialists.

New Bird Is The First Of 32 787s On Order

Boeing and the Lufthansa Group are celebrating the delivery of the first 787 Dreamliner, a 787-9, to Europe's largest airline group at Paine Field, Everett, Wash. The Lufthansa Group has 32 firm orders for the 787 and joins nearly 50 customers worldwide in operating the airframe. Using 25% less fuel and creating 25% fewer emissions than the airplanes they replace, Boeing brags that the 787 family has avoided more than 125 billion pounds of carbon emissions since entering service in 2011.

AMO & Partners Seize Over 77 Tons Of Narcotics To Date in FY22

Air and Marine Operations (AMO) worked with their federal and international partners to seize 121,667 pounds of cocaine and 33,226 pounds of marijuana in international waters through the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2022, denying transnational criminal organizations an estimated $2.4 billion USD. Overall, narcotic seizures involving AMO’s P-3 crew operations have increased through the third quarter of Fiscal Year 2022 when compared to the previous fiscal year.

Relatives... Told Investigators The Pilot Would Often Conduct Low Altitude Flights And Perform Aerobatic Maneuvers Over The Relatives’ Home

On August 21, 2022, at 1403 Pacific daylight time, an experimental homebuilt Vans RV-8 airplane, N184DJ, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Scio, Oregon. The pilot and passenger were fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. Witnesses, including relatives of the pilot, told investigators the pilot would often conduct low altitude flights and perform aerobatic maneuvers over the relatives’ home.

AD 2022-16-04 Corrects An Airworthiness Directive (AD) That Published In The Federal Register

The FAA is correcting an airworthiness directive (AD) that published in the Federal Register. That AD applies to all Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation (Gulfstream) Model GV and GV-SP airplanes. As published, a revision level and a table number in certain document citations in the Credit for Previous Actions section of the regulatory text are incorrect. This document corrects those errors. In all other respects, the original document remains the same. This correction is effective September 7, 2022. The effective date of AD 2022-16-04 remains September 7, 2022.
