Midwest Airlines, Inc. announced yesterday
afternoon that it has reached tentative agreement on wage
concessions with the Air Line Pilots Association, which represents
the airline's pilots. The agreement provides for significant
reductions in pilots' hourly pay rates through November 1. Pending
approval by the union's national office, the concessions become
effective April 16.
The concessions are part of a companywide strategic plan to
reduce costs by $4 million monthly.
Thomas C. Irwin, vice president of Flight Operations for
Midwest, said the pilot group has demonstrated leadership in
efforts to ensure the airline's survival. "Our commitment to our
customers and the communities we serve is underscored by this
agreement. All of us, regardless of our titles or jobs, care about
this airline and are dedicated to its long-term success."
"We remain committed to helping enhance the future
viability of Midwest Airlines," said Captain Jerome G. Schnedorf,
chairman of the union's local Master Executive Council. "We will be
working with management over the next several weeks to discuss
issues regarding staffing, scheduling and productivity that will
further contribute to achieving our mutual goals."
Midwest Airlines features nonstop jet service to major
destinations throughout the United States. Skyway Airlines, Inc. --
its wholly owned subsidiary -- operates Midwest Connect, which
offers connections to Midwest Airlines as well as point-to-point
service between select markets on regional jet and turboprop
aircraft. Together, the airlines offer service to 51 cities.
