Airborne 06.22.16: Lumenati Solar, Microlight e-Go, AirVenture16 After-Hours

Also: NATA, Hartzell’s Joe Brown, Donations Sought, Blue Origin, Blue Angels, Bezos Wants Prizes, CRJ900

Solar Impulse-Two was not the only solar-powered aircraft at New York's JFK Airport this last weekend.

The ‘No fuel’ Solar Impulse was joined by another ‘clean energy’ airplane that uses a combination of solar, electric and wind-power, which landed at New York’s John F. Kennedy Airport after a 200-mile flight. The Luminati Aerospace Substrata is a 400-pound solar electric aircraft with a 45-foot wingspan. The Substrata employs a blend of solar power, batteries, and what the company calls “wind-harvesting technologies.” The company says the Substrata extracts energy from any wind gradient, which allows the craft to be powered by relatively small battery packs. Recreational aviation comes in many shapes and forms, and one of those is a sporty little single-place airplane. It’s been reported that the first production e-Go microlight airplane has rolled off the production line and been delivered to its new owner. The e-Go is manufactured in Conington, Cambridge in the U.K. The airplane is powered by a Wankel rotary engine that can run on MoGas. Because it has a maximum weight of only 595 pounds, it does not require certification in the UK, but in the U.S. it would require an FAA airworthiness certificate. This year at AirVenture Oshkosh 2016, EAA is packing even more fun into the week’s schedule with additional evening flying events. Added to the Wednesday and Saturday night air shows this year, AirVenture-goers will enjoy evening demonstrations throughout the week evenings by both World War-One and Valdez STOL aircraft. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne!!!
