Chicagoland Sees Unusual Springtime Snowstorm

Arrival Delays Near 3.5 Hours At O'Hare

ANN REALTIME REPORTING 03.21.08 1230 EDT: A fairly rare, springtime snowstorm is expected to wreak havoc around the Chicago area Friday, with forecasters predicting up to 11" of heavy, wet snow... just in time to mess with holiday travel plans for many airline passengers.

At this time, departure delays at O'Hare International (ORD) are running between 45-60 minutes on average, with 30 minute delays common at Midway (MDW). Airlines serving both airports cancelled flights ahead of the storm, which could drop as much as two inches of snow an hour.

That's not the worst of it, however. According to the FAA, some arrivals into ORD have been delayed, on average, three hours and 23 minutes. Ground stops have been in effect on-and-off throughout the morning hours.

As many as 280 flights have been cancelled between the two airports, according to The Associated Press.

The snowstorm is expected to last into Saturday morning.
