L-3 Awarded Contract For Second-Generation Passenger Screening Systems

Devices Being Delivered To TSA For Deployment

The Security and Detection Systems division of L-3 Communications has received an award from the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) to supply the second generation of Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT) systems. The indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity (ID/IQ) contract has a ceiling value of $245 million.

Under this contract, L-3 will supply its new Provision 2 system to TSA. Provision 2 is a reduced-size personnel screening system that provides the same image-free threat detection capabilities and safe millimeter wave technology as the widely deployed ProVision ATD system. The ProVision 2 detects metallic and non-metallic objects, such as weapons, explosives and other targets. Reduced-sized systems provide an alternative to full-size systems, helping to reduce the overall footprint for smaller checkpoint configurations.

TSA had come under fire for its use of X-ray scanners during the passenger screening process because of the level of detail shown to the employees reviewing the scans. The agency is in the process of upgrading major airports to less-revealing backscatter scanners, but the X-ray devices are still in use at some smaller airports around the country.

L-3 is a prime contractor in C3ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) systems, aircraft modernization and maintenance, and national security solutions. The company also is a leading provider of a broad range of electronic systems used on military and commercial platforms.
