Sikorsky Sued By Former Soldier Over Black Hawk Accident

Helicopter Went Down At Texas A & M University In 2009

A former soldier is suing Sikorsky for negligence after being injured in a 2009 accident in Texas that fatally injured two active-duty soldiers and seriously injured three others.

Matthew Smith was the pilot of the UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter when it went down on a flight transporting Army cadets from Texas A & M University to Camp Smith nearby, according to an archival report appearing in Wikimeida. The Southeast Texas Record reports that Smith filed the lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for The Southern District of Texas on January 14.

According to court documents, Smith said that the helo began to spin to the left and continued in that spin until it impacted terrain in Brazos County, TX. The complaint alleges that Sikorsky was negligent in the design of the yaw boost servo installed on the aircraft, and failed to properly warn pilots of an issue with the component.

Smith is seeking unspecified damages in excess of $100,000 for the injuries he sustained in the accident.
