Airlines Reported Fuller Flights In '06

Most See Gains Despite Cuts In Service

Honolulu's Pacific Business News reports that four of the big five United States legacy air carriers flew their planes an average of more than three-quarters full in February, and three of the five saw revenue mile increases over a year ago.

In the cases of American Airlines and United Airlines, both trimmed routes more than the resulting declines in traffic, so their capacity was more fully utilized. Delta, Northwest and Continental all added service, but only Continental saw traffic grow faster than it added capacity.

On the other side of the equation, Delta was the only airline of the group with a load factor below 75 percent.

American Airlines retained its passenger-miles title, with $9.7 billion for the month, followed by United, Delta, Continental and Northwest.

US Airways Group had not reported its numbers as of Monday night. Once it fully consolidates its operations with America West, USAG will be comparable in size to Continental and Northwest.
