Senate Approves $100K For NAHA

Conflicts With House

The US Senate authorized $100,000 to be spent on the newly formed National Aviation Heritage Area with  the passage of the fiscal year 2006 Interior Appropriations Bill Thursday.

US Sen. Mike DeWine, R-Ohio, said the money is meant to help facilitate collaboration among the various organizations involved locally in aviation heritage tourism and education.

The US House of Representatives version of the bill includes $200,000 for the Heritage Area along with other differences. The bill now will go to committee to come up with a compromise between the two versions.

The heritage area was created through a bill introduced by US Rep. Dave Hobson, R-Springfield.

The National Aviation Heritage Area is an eight-county region in Southwest Ohio that is intended to build upon the Wright brothers' legacy and the aviation history that followed them in the Dayton, Ohio region.

The heritage area's boundaries include Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park. The area will be managed by the non-profit, Aviation Heritage Foundation, Incorporated.

Federal, state and local governments and the private sector have partnered together to work on interpretation and preservation projects since the Dayton Aviation Heritage Preservation Act was passed in 1992.
