2024 USAF Budget Makes Tough, 'Uncool' Choices

A-10s, F-22s on the Outs with Orders for F-35s, KC-36s, and F-15EXs

The Air Force's FY2024 budget of 215 billion appears to have made some harsh selections in fleet sizing, with plans to eliminate 32 Block 20 F22A Raptors, 57 F-15C and D model Eagles, and 42 A-10 Warthogs. The budget also looks to buy 14 KC-46A Pegasus tankers, 7 MH-139A Grey Wolf helicopters, 24 F-15EX Eagle IIs, 48 F-35A Joint Strike Fighters, and a single E-11A BACN. The choice to slash the fleets of two enthusiast favorites, the A-10 and F-22, will likely be a hard pill to swallow for some.

The White House has stated that Joe Biden’s nominee to lead the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), needs no waiver from Congress to be confirmed. Appointment to high positions in numerous federal regulatory agencies are expressly predicated upon nominees being civilians, not military personnel. Previous FAA nominees with retired military status—specifically, those who served twenty-or-more years in uniform—were required to secure waivers from both the House and Senate. The Biden White House, however, has deemed for reasons passing understanding that Phil Washington is an exception to the requirement.

LIFT Completes First Crewed eVTOL Flights in Japan

Piloted HEXA Aircraft Demo Will Complete Tour Throughout Country

Lift's Hexa aircraft made a notable demo for the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB), obtaining approval for additional demonstrations. The company completed Phase 1 flight testing and initial envelope development with the USAF, moving onward to Alpha Flights to allow persons outside the company to fly the prototype Hexa. Demonstrations were held on a field within sight of the Osaka Castle, with Masatoshi Kumagai of GMO Internet Group taking up the helm for a few flights in the pattern after a brief introduction to the aircraft.

JetBlue and Shell Aviation Announce LAX SAF Agreement

JetBlue, the U.S. low-cost airlines currently at odds with the Biden DOJ over its proposed acquisition of Spirit Airlines, and Shell Aviation, the aerospace subsidiary of the British-Dutch multinational oil and gas company, announced on 14 March 2023 that the two companies would collaborate to bolster the Los Angeles International Airport’s (LAX) supply of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). JetBlue and Shell Aviation look to commence SAF deliveries to LAX in the first half of 2023.

Inmarsat, the British satellite telecommunications company, announced On 15 March 2023 that Singapore-based Heron AirBridge, a concern specializing in Unmanned Aircraft System Traffic Management (UTM) in the Asia Pacific region, had joined its Velaris Partner Network—a connectivity service intended to support the growth of the emergent commercial Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) sector. Inmarsat asserts the partnership will set the worldwide standard for the integration of UAVs into national airspace systems.

NTSB Prelim: Cessna 150G

Airplane Impacted A Tree About 205 Ft Prior To The Final Resting Place

On February 27, 2023, about 1655 eastern standard time, a Cessna 150G, N2991J, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Hillsville, Virginia. The pilot was fatally injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. A friend of the pilot reported that the pilot flew from Twin County Airport (HLX), Hillsville, Virginia, to Burlington/Alamance Regional Airport (BUY), Burlington, North Carolina, to pick up parts for an engine the pilot was working on.
