On 09 March 2023, the Reno Air Racing Association’s Board of Directors announced with leaden hearts that after nearly sixty-years of exhilarating air-racing in northern Nevada, 2023’s event will be the last National Championship Air Races held at the Reno-Stead Airport (4SD). In a letter addressed “To Our Loyal Fans and Passionate Community,” the race’s board of directors stated: “While we knew this day might come, we had hoped it wouldn’t come so soon.”

European Space Agency Wants Lunar Time Zone

As Focus on Space Grows, Stakeholders Seek Standardization

The ESA has begun a push for a standardized lunar time zone, after the idea was floated in the Netherlands in late 2022. The change would create a common lunar reference time for use between all space operators, moving away from the current system where each mission is governed by its parent country’s time zone. Textron has been issued a special airworthiness certificate from the FAA to conduct Aerosonde drone operations at its Unmanned Systems Service and Support Center located in Blackstone, Virginia. The Aerosonde is a small, high endurance, expeditionary drone powered by a fueled, reciprocating engine. US Space Command Publishes Points of Focus for Operations

“Specific Behaviors” Outline Ideal Space Force Behavior

The U.S. Space Command published its list of proposed specific behaviors for future operations, setting out 8 points of particular focus for US operations in space. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III signed the Tenets of Responsible Behavior in Space in July of 2021, acknowledging 5 longstanding DoD tenets of responsible military behaviors in space. USAF Puts KC-46 to Work on Unconventional Airfields

New Tanker Trains on Off-Airport Runways 

Pilots from the 22nd Air Refueling Wing got a chance to try out the KC-46A Pegasus in tandem with the USAF's Airfield Marking Patterns (AMP)-3 system, practicing unconventional airfield operations. The AMP-3 system is a collection of man-portable landing aids designed to mark off unconventional runways, allowing operation from unmarked runways, roadways, or interstates. The AMP-3 builds on versions 1 and 2 with day/night capability, allowing tactical airlifts to happen with less environmental constraints.
