The County of Santa Clara alongside a coalition of community groups (often associated with anti-aviation programs) represented by Earthjustice filed a petition calling on the EPA to take steps to eliminate lead pollution from aircraft across the US. The Petition follows a study commissioned by the County of Santa Clara on lead exposure risks for 13,000 children living near Reid-Hillview Airport in East San José, which is located in the heart of Silicon Valley. Various anti-airport political factions and property developers have been trying to get the airport closed down for many years -- this appears to be their latest weapon.&

August 26th marked what would have been Katherine Johnson’s 103rd birthday. Born in West Virginia before helping lead humanity to the moon, her accomplishments laid the groundwork for today’s mission as we are on the horizon of a return to the moon. Johnson broke into STEM and made history, paving the way for many to follow her. She did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s Freedom 7 mission in May 1961, the US’s first human spaceflight. Drone Footage Helps Firefighters Stay Safe

Over the weekend in Scottsdale, AZ, a drone was used by the Scottsdale Fire Department to assist in the repair of a gas leak. Firefighters said the leak was making a ‘jet engine sounding noise’ and was identified as a six-inch main that had been torn into pieces. The use of the drone was key in keeping firefighters safe during the event. The drone footage made it easier for firefighters to find the safest entry points as well. 14 individuals are now able to operate three drones for the city after completing their FAA certification. They will be operating for three battalions and a technical rescue unit.

The Rocket Made It 31 Miles Before Descending Back To Earth

Astra Space launched a rocket in Alaska over the weekend, the company's first since going public. The rocket failed to achieve its goal of making orbit. Astra founder and CEO Chris Kemp says that one engine shut down about one second into the rocket's first flight. “It was obviously not successful at putting anything in orbit, but it was a flight where we learned a tremendous amount,” Kemp said, according to CNBC. “We do have a serial 7 which is right now in production and we’ll take what we learned here and incorporate whatever changes into that rocket and will be flying soon. Suddenly The Nose Pitched Up, Then Pitched Down As The Gyroplane Rapidly Descended

On August 7, 2021, about 1115 central daylight time, an unregistered Rotary Air Force RAF 2000 gyroplane, sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Anahuac, Texas. The pilot was uninjured, and the passenger sustained minor injuries. The flight was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 test flight. The pilot stated that he was completing a test flight after a new trim system was installed. After departure, about 50 ft above ground level, he actuated the trim switch and did not notice an immediate response.

Takeoff Hold Lights (THL) The THL system is composed of in-pavement lighting in a double, longitudinal row of lights aligned either side of the runway centerline. The lights are focused toward the arrival end of the runway at the “line up and wait” point, and they extend for 1,500 feet in front of the holding aircraft. Illuminated red lights indicate to an aircraft in position for takeoff or rolling that it is unsafe to takeoff because the runway is occupied or about to be occupied by an aircraft or vehicle.
