In general, an aircraft flight so planned and navigated as to take advantage of the flight-altitude winds (pressure pattern) to reduce flying time. As techniques have advanced, this concept has become increasingly referred to as minimal flight. Probably the most widely used method today is based upon the determination of D-values with pressure and radio altimeters while in flight.

Source: David Bjellos, described as an "aviation expert" with WPTV-5 in West Palm Beach, FL, cautioning people not to jump to conclusions about the safety of homebuilt aircraft following a Monday takeoff crash involving a Lancair IV-P. The accident, which killed the pilot, was the fourth fatal crash involving the type in three months.
