ATSB Turns Down UAL Request For Loan Guarantees... Again
Well, if this isn't a firm "no," we don't know what is.
The Air Transportation Stabilization Board Monday rejected United
Airlines' latest request for more than $1 billion in loan
guarantees. ATSB Executive Director Michael Kestenbaum said, "The
board will not accept any further submissions from United with
respect to the application."
Sitting through a number of the techical sessions, ANN
found them unusually well-prepared and germane to the proceedings.
Rather than just being sales pitches for one thing or another,
there was an excellent effort on the part of all those concerned to
present an interesting and valuable educational program.
Miami-Dade Officials Institute "Management Watch"
The woman once hailed as the savior of Miami's airports is now
reportedly considered a goat and has been put on what her boss
calls "management watch."
In a country where you need all the friends you can get, flying
to see them is suddenly much more difficult.
Israel has suspended flights of its flagship carrier, El Al, to and

with Turkey over aviation security. Specifically, according to the
Israeli business publication Globes, the Turks have a problem with
armed Israeli security agents posted inside their airports.
Two people -- one of them an off-duty Oklahoma City (OK) police
officer -- died and three members of a popular band were
hospitalized when a Bell 206B helicopter became entangled in power
lines and fell into the Cimarron River near Cushing (OK), according
to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

Okay, this may be stepping out of the role of objective
journalist, but how stupid is this: A Connecticut-based grocery
chain wants to build a store near Republic Airport in East
Farmingdale (NY). That's well and good except that the store wants
to build inside the RPZ at the end of Runway 14.
Recovery operations for a missing Marine Corps pilot and F/A-18C
Hornet aircraft operating from the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75)
were suspended Monday. The pilot, Capt. Franklin R. Hooks II, 32,
of Pasco (FL), was killed in the accident.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) has published
its annual survey of general aviation service employee
compensation. The survey includes salaries and benefits for pilots,
line-service personnel and maintenance technicians.
"(The) board concluded that granting the loan guarantee is not a
necessary part of maintaining a safe, efficient, and viable
commercial aviation system in the United States. Moreover, the
Board believes that airline credit markets have been improving
since late 2001 and 2002... increasing the likelihood of United
succeeding without a loan guarantee."

for loan guarantees. The ATSB said, in effect, don't bother
applying again.
Preparations for the annual aviation swap meet of the year, EAA
AeroMart, are in full swing with anticipations for another greatly
successful year. AeroMart provides a common place where people with
spare, usable aviation parts and people looking for them meet and
do business. Bargains are common, sales are final, and both buyer
and seller are satisfied.
Promises Higher Performance, Lower Costs for Hunter Unmanned
Aerial Vehicle
The Army's RQ-5A Hunter UAV will be able to climb faster,
operate at higher altitudes, and spend less time being serviced
thanks to the integration of a heavy-fuel engine on the air vehicle
by Northrop Grumman Corporation, the Hunter prime contractor.
