The Advanced Precision Kill Weapon System (APKWS) recently achieved a first shot success from a fixed-wing aircraft, according to the weapon's developer. The semi-active laser guided version of the U.S. military’s Hydra rocket successfully hit within inches of the center of its laser spot target after it was fired off a Hawker Beechcraft AT-6C from a range of three miles.

Boeing has announced dates and locations for the fourth segment of the 787 Dream Tour beginning March 1. Stops will include visits to cities in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In addition, the Dream Tour airplane, ZA003, will be featured at the FIDAE Air Show in Santiago, Chile, in late March to kick off the fifth segment of the tour.

On February 16, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz announced that Kadena's 67th Fighter Squadron earned the Raytheon Trophy for 2011. The annual award, originally started by the Hughes Aircraft Company in 1953, is now sponsored by Raytheon Systems Corporation and is given to the top air superiority or air defense squadron in the Air Force.

NASA-Derived Technology Enables Accurate Volcanic-Ash Assessment At Airport In Argentina

At the request of the Argentinean Ministry of Defense, a LiDAR system developed by Sigma Space was installed at Bariloche airport in Argentina on January 30th. Since the June 2011 eruption of the Chilean Puyehue, Bariloche has been suffering from intermittent ash clouds blowing from the volcano, and the airport in Bariloche has been closed much of the time since the eruption.

System Expected to Deliver Almost $5 Million in Savings Over 20 Years

Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and SunPower Corp dedicated a 5.4-megawatt high efficiency SunPower solar power system on Wednesday. The system is expected to generate the equivalent of 51 percent of the electricity demand at the airport's rental car center, two East Economy parking garages and toll plaza, saving $4.7 million over the next 20 years.

Is the worst of the recession over... at least as far as the aviation world is concerned? Hard to say... and though GAMA pronounced that 2011 was to be the turn-around year, we were sadly disappointed. Hopefully, though, the current doldrums may be the worst of it... FAA Expected To Report Controller Errors Largely Flat In 2011

Number Had Surged Over The Previous Three Years

Sources close to a report being prepared by the FAA say it will show that the number of errors reported by air traffic controllers was nearly flat in 2011 after climbing sharply the previous three years. The Wall Street Journal reports its sources say the number of errors reported by controllers will come in at about 1,900 for 2011, including about 50 incidents in which aircraft were close enough to cause concerns about a collision in the judgement of the FAA.

After more than 40 years of service, the Marine Corps retired the aging CH-53D Sea Stallion helicopter during a “sundown ceremony” February 10 at the Pacific Aviation Museum Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. “From Vietnam, to Iraq and now in Afghanistan, the helicopter has provided sustaining and mission critical lift in every clime and place over past 40 plus years,” said Marine Corps Col. Robert Pridgen, program manager for the H-53 Heavy Lift Helicopters Program Office (PMA-261).
