One Of The Pioneer Women In Aviation

News has come in to ANN that Betty Skelton Erde, known as one of the pioneer women in aviation, passed away in Florida Wednesday. She was 86 years old. Erde, a resident of Winter Park, Florida, was born in Pensacola, FL in 1926. According to Wikipedia, she set 17 aviation and automobile records and was credited with opening doors for women in aviation and the automotive world, as well as astronautics and advertising.

The recent test of an unmanned spacecraft funded by Internet billionaire Jeff Bezos ended with the the vehicle being destroyed shortly after launch.U.S. Government and industry officials said the sub-orbital vertical launch vehicle being tested by Blue Origin LLC went out of control at about 45,000 feet and was destroyed as a precaution.

Close Vote, But Flight Crew Licensing Changes Pass

IAOPA is reporting in its newsletter that the European Parliament has approved EASA-FCL (Flight Crew Licensing) 22-16 despite a last-minute attempt to have it sent back to EASA for redrafting because of unresolved issues surrounding third-country licences. IAOPA says the vote was something of a surprise, as Parliament's Transport Committee chairman Brian Simpson and his socialist group voted in EASA's favour.

Aspen Avionics and ForeFlight announced Wednesday that ForeFlight Mobile 4.1 currently includes support for Aspen’s Connected Panel technology, which is scheduled for release by the end of the year. Users will be able to wirelessly tune radios and submit and retrieve flight plans utilizing the Aspen Connected Panel communication network.

President Obama And Youngest Daughter Motorcade To Camp David

President Obama and his daughter Sasha started out on a fairly routine 30 minute flight to Camp David Friday afternoon, but were unexpectedly diverted to an undisclosed LZ near Frederick Maryland because of "bad weather." White House press secretary Jay Carney said the weather determination was made before the President and his daughter boarded the aircraft in Washington.

Dollars Allocated To Improve Safety, Facilities At 18 Airports

Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett on Thursday announced a $4 million state investment that will upgrade facilities and improve safety at 18 Pennsylvania airports. "Aviation provides nearly 5 percent of Pennsylvania's jobs," Governor Corbett said. "Investing in these improvements and safety measures helps those thousands of people do their jobs better, and will improve airport operations."

Prestigious University Allegedly Shipped Devices With Lithium Batteries Which Caught Fire

The FAA is proposing a $175,000 civil penalty against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) for alleged violations of Department of Transportation Hazardous Materials Regulations. The FAA alleges that MIT offered a fiberboard box containing 33 electronic devices to FedEx for transportation by air from Cambridge to Seattle on Aug. 25, 2009.  Each electronic device consisted of a lithium battery attached to a circuit board and tube-like container.

British Airways Provides East Africa Relief Flight

British Airways is thanking its customers and volunteers for making it possible to deliver relief supplies to drought-stricken East Africa, where over a half-million people are directly at risk of starvation. BA flew a Boeing 747 freighter full of emergency supplies and equipment to Ethiopia on Friday, August 12, carrying aid from Oxfam and UNICEF. The two charities are among those working in the region.
