Airborne-Unmanned 05.14.19: Unlawful Drone Demo?, UAS Detection, Schiebel Wins

Questions have arisen over the use of anti-drone jamming technology during the recent Ultra Music Festival in south Florida.

A company called "Rational Point" said that it, along with its partners Vigilant Drone Defense and Pemica provided counter-UAV services to protect the Ultra Music Festival from ‘unauthorized’ drones. The company claims they were able to "intercept a total of 61 drones that were attempting to enter the secure airspace above the festival. All 61 drones that were intercepted were visually confirmed intercepts. During our three days of service, no unauthorized drones were able to penetrate the secure airspace protecting the Ultra Music Festival." Vigilant hasn't defined what was unauthorized, and the FAA says that they did not give them such authority. However, ANN has learned that there was no TFR covering the festival and that many details given by Vigilant have been heavily disputed by other drone experts. The FAA understands airport safety and security concerns raised by the malicious or errant use of UAS. The agency shares these concerns. In order to support the safe integration of UAS detection systems into the airport environment, the FAA provided important information and continues to work closely with airport operators who are considering installing UAS detection systems or have already installed such systems on or near their airports. Norway’s Andøya Test Center selected Schiebel’s Camcopter S-100 Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) Unmanned Air System (UAS) for extensive search and rescue trials as part of their Arctic 2030 project. In a typical configuration, the Camcopter S-100 operates six hours continuously and is able to simultaneously carry multiple payloads, offering significant payload flexibility. Therefore, the S-100’s missions deliver aerial views that may reach considerably farther than manned helicopters. All this -- and MORE in today's episode of Airborne-Unmanned!!!
