Airborne-NextGen 08.22.23: MD-90 Becomes X-66A, BWB Prototype, Drone Search

Boeing is making ready to modify an MD-90 narrow-body airliner—transforming the machine radically for purpose of testing the company’s Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW) architecture under the auspices of NASA's Sustainable Flight Demonstrator project. Upon completion of an extensive series of structural modifications, the MD-90 will emerge as the X-66A. JetZero has benefitted from a US Air Force award of $235-million to build an airliner-scale, piloted, Blended Wing Body technology demonstrator in partnership with Northrop-Grumman and Scaled Composites. FAA Issues Emergency AD For Bell 407

An Investigation By Bell Textron Canada Limited Identified 43 T/R Blades That Could Have Missing Adhesive 

An Emergency Airworthiness Directive, AD #2023-17-51, has been sent to owners and operators of Bell Textron Canada Limited Model 407 helicopters over concerns with possible issues in the aircraft's tail rotor. According to the E-AD, "This emergency AD was prompted by a report of a disbonded area in a tail rotor (T/R) blade due to missing adhesive between the upper skin and core. Transport Canada, which is the aviation authority for Canada, has issued Transport Canada Emergency AD CF-2023-63, dated August 17, 2023 (Transport Canada AD CF-2023-63), to correct an unsafe condition on certain serial-numbered Bell Textron Canada Limited M

Montaer Aeronaves unveiled a follow-up to its 2-seat MC-01 Aircraft, with a 4-seater sporting IFR-ready avionics and a parachute. The all-metal, high-wing, tricycle geared MC-04 sports a Rotax 916 iS with all 160 turbocharged ponies under the hood, granting it a 132-knot cruise for 800 nautical miles. A constant-speed prop helps to put the finishing touch on a nice little package from a firm ordinarily associated with 2-seater LSA’s.

Gyro Revolution is a Gyroplane sales, service, and training concern. The Ronkonkoma, New York-based company is among the U.S.’s premier gyroplane flight-training institutions and offers multiple levels of gyroplane certification. Gyro Revolution recently opened a satellite operation in Florida’s Miami/Fort Lauderdale area. United Airlines Pledges $1.25-Million to Aviation and STEM Education

United Airlines has pledged $1.25-million to the funding of aviation and Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in schools across the airline’s seven hub locales: Chicago, Denver, Washington, D.C., New York, Houston, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. The airline will also help fund aviation and STEM curricula in Phoenix and across Hawaii. The Patrouille de France performed in April at Sun 'n Fun, and then toured a large portion of the U.S. during the month of April. In an interview with ANN Editor in Chief Jim Campbell, Lead Solo Pilot Capt. Aubert said that the team trained all winter for the 2017 demonstration to match with U.S. regulations for military team performances at air shows. NTSB Final Report: Cameron Balloons US O-120

Postmortem Toxicology Testing Of Specimens From The Pilot Was Consistent With The Recent Use Of Cannabis (THC) And Cocaine

Analysis: The pilot was conducting a sightseeing flight, with four passengers on board the balloon. Near the conclusion of the flight, the pilot maneuvered the balloon to land in an open field across a major intersection. Power lines were orientated nearly perpendicular to the balloon’s flight path to the field. The power lines were hung between metal poles that were about 78 ft high. ANN's Daily Aero-Term (08.22.23): Circle To Runway (Runway Number)

Circle To Runway (Runway Number) Used by ATC to inform the pilot that he/she must circle to land because the runway in use is other than the runway aligned with the instrument approach procedure. When the direction of the circling maneuver in relation to the airport/runway is required, the controller will state the direction (eight cardinal compass points) and specify a left or right downwind or base leg as appropriate; e.g., “Cleared VOR Runway Three Six Approach circle to Runway Two Two,” or “Circle northwest of the airport for a right downwind to Runway Two Two.”
