Blue Origin Announces Next Space Passengers For New Shepherd

Upcoming Human Flight Is Also Rumored To Be Interested In Flying William Shatner

Blue Origin has announced New Shepard’s 18th mission, NS-18, will lift off on Tuesday, October 12, carrying four astronauts to space and back, including Dr. Chris Boshuizen, a former NASA engineer and co-founder of Planet Labs, and Glen de Vries, Vice-Chair, Life Sciences & Healthcare, Dassault Systèmes and co-founder, Medidata. The two other astronauts will be announced in the coming days (William Shatner???). Live launch coverage begins on BlueOrigin.com at T-60 minutes. Liftoff is currently targeted for 8:30 am CDT/ 13:30 UTC from Launch Site One in West Texas.

Bell Boeing Upgrades Underway For Air Force CV-22s

Aircraft Modifications Help Reduce Repair Time & Improve Readiness

The first Air Force CV-22 Osprey designated for nacelle improvement modifications arrived at Bell’s Amarillo Assembly Center on Sept. 21. The aircraft is part of an ongoing process by Bell and Boeing to further increase the Osprey’s reliability and maintainability for the Department of Defense (DOD). Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) awarded Bell Boeing an $81 million contract in December 2020 to complete Nacelle Improvements on the CV-22 fleet. The contract covers completion of non-recurring elements, fabrication of nine kits, and installation of one kit. NAVAIR has an option period to cover fabrication and installation through 2025.

On August 21, 2021, about 0853 central daylight time, an Aeronca 7AC airplane, N1472E, sustained substantial damage when it was involved in an accident near Fort Worth, Texas. The FAA is superseding Airworthiness Directive (AD) 2020-15-12 for certain Rolls-Royce Deutschland Ltd & Co KG (RRD) Trent 1000 model turbofan engines. AD 2020-15-12 required initial and repetitive ultrasonic or visual inspections of the intermediate-pressure compressor (IPC) stage 1 rotor blade root (front face), IPC stage 2 rotor blade root (front and rear face), and IPC shaft stage 2 dovetail post (front face), and removal of any cracked parts from service. AD 2020-15-12 also required an inspection after asymmetric power and cabin depressurization events. This AD was prompted by IPC rotor blade separations resulting in engine failures.

The FAA is adopting a new airworthiness directive (AD) for all General Electric Company (GE) CF34-8 model turbofan engines with a certain outer shell combustion liner (combustion outer liner shell) installed. This AD was prompted by two in-flight engine shutdowns (IFSDs) that occurred as a result of failures of the combustion outer liner shell.
