The NTSB determined during a public meeting Tuesday, a pilot’s decision to continue flight under visual flight rules into instrument meteorological conditions, which resulted in the pilot’s spatial disorientation and loss of control, led to the fatal, Jan. 26, 2020, crash of a Sikorsky S-76B helicopter in Calabasas, California. The pilot and eight passengers died when the helicopter, operated by Island Express Helicopters, Inc., entered a rapidly descending left turn and crashed into terrain. The flight departed from John Wayne Airport-Orange County, Santa Ana, California, and was bound for Camarillo, California.

Total Sales Exceed $2.2 Billion For The Year

AEA has released its 2020 year-end Avionics Market Report, and total worldwide business and general aviation avionics sales for the year amounted to $2,223,729,327, or more than $2.2 billion as reported by the participating companies. The dollar amount represented a 26% decrease in total year-end sales compared to 2019, which set a record-high total that topped $3 billion. It also marked the lowest amount of sales in the report's nine-year history. During the fourth-quarter months of October, November and December, sales decreased 28.1% compared to the same time frame one year ago.

Upgrades For UPS Airlines’ Fleet of 52 A300-600 Freighters Underway

Airbus has handed over the first completed cockpit upgrade for UPS Airlines’ fleet of 52 A300-600 Freighters. The aircraft (MSN868), equipped with Honeywell cockpit avionics, was redelivered to UPS on 3rd February at Airbus’ U.S. facility in Mobile Alabama following the certification by EASA on 22nd December 2020 and by the FAA on 5th January 2021. This is the first time that such a complex upgrade has been performed on the A300. UPS expects to have the entire fleet converted by peak season of 2022.

Taking Key Step Towards Certifying Aircraft

Joby Aviation tells ANN that it has begun generating revenue as part of achieving another major milestone in the Agility Prime program. The company also announced that it has agreed to a ‘G1’ certification basis for its aircraft with the FAA. This agreement lays out the specific requirements that need to be met by Joby’s aircraft for it to be certified for commercial operations. The Sebring Sport Aviation Expo has "Sport" prominently featured in its name, and one of the fastest-growing segments of sports, and sport aviation, is drone racing. So it would seem to make sense that steps from the Sebring Speedway, drone racing was taking place at the January air show. Brian Morris of Team Multistar told ANN CEO and Editor in Chief Jim Campbell that there were about 110 of the fastest drone pilots competing at the show for a total prize purse of $20,000, with $10,000 going to the overall winner of the event.

American Flyers Operates Six Training Facilities

American Flyers has received the first eight Pilot 100i aircraft from Piper. Mike Bliss, the Chairman of the American Flyers National Safety Board, explained “This airplane will enable us to maintain our policy of "round dial" training for the Private Pilot Certificate and the first half of the instrument rating. It creates a stronger pilot by reinforcing the basic skills and foundations necessary to become a safe and proficient pilot.”

Nordic Unmanned has acquired two Camcopter S-100 systems, with the first delivered last week and another joining it in Q2 2021. This acquisition comes after successful sulphur sniffer operations in Denmark and France.
