NTSB Issues Statement Re: Use of Recorded Interviews in Accident Investigations

Board Cites AAL-Delta JFK Runway Incursion

On 10 February 2023, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued a statement pertaining to the use of recorded interviews in aviation accident investigations. The Board’s statement cites a 13 January 2023 incident in which American Airlines Flight 106—a Boeing 777-200 departing New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) bound for London’s Heathrow Airport (LHR)—crossed JFK’s Runway 4L without Air Traffic Control (ATC) clearance. The resultant runway incursion compelled the flight-crew of Delta Air Lines Flight 1943, a Boeing 737-900ER departing for the Dominican capital city of Santo Domingo (SDQ) to abort a take-off on JFK Runway 4L.

NGPA Announces New Executive Director

The National Gay Pilot Association has announced the installment of their new Executive Director, Justin Ellixson-Andrews. The group "embarked on a year-long national search to define and select the next era of leadership", surveying all 92 applicants for suitability. Trio of Youth Soaring Camp Scholarships Return for 2023

Flight Experience For Youth (FEFY), a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, announced a trio of Youth Soaring Camp scholarships for the summer of 2023. The group is dedicated to "creating growth opportunities for young people through aviation experiences and education", leveraging the thrill of flight to build hands-on experience in the world around them. The camp is a week-long, immersive experience that includes 10 instructional flights, ground school, meals, supervised overnight camping on the airfield, and daily activities. The scholarships cover the full cost of tuition for students 13-18.

Bigger than a Bread Basket, Smaller than a Chinese Spy Balloon

On Friday, 10 February 2023, a U.S. military fighter jet shot down an unknown object transitioning Alaska’s remote northern coast. White House National Security Council spokesman John Kirby alleged the object overflying Alaska was downed not on account of any knowledge it was engaged in surveillance, but because it was maintaining an altitude of approximately FL400, thereby posing a “reasonable threat” to civilian air traffic.

NTSB Prelim: Cheek Carroll Hatz/Cheek

Pilot Reported A Gradual Loss Of Engine Power During Cruise Flight

On January 15, 2023, about 0930 central standard time, a Carroll Cheek Hatz/Cheek airplane, N1957P, was substantially damaged when it was involved in an accident near Brashear, Texas. The pilot was not injured. The airplane was operated as a Title 14 Code of Federal Regulations Part 91 personal flight. The pilot reported a gradual loss of engine power during cruise flight. He applied carburetor heat when the engine began running rough which seemed to make the situation worse.
