Boeing To Cut Jobs In Defense Programs

As Many As 1,000 Could Be Affected

An internal memo distributed to Boeing employees on Monday indicated that defense cuts will cost about 1,000 people their jobs with the company, but it has not been determined exactly where the cuts will be made.

The memo, which came from Jim Albaugh, the head of Boeing's Integrated Defense Systems division, said the job reductions are needed "to keep ourselves competitive."

The Assiciated Press reports Boeing CEO Jim McNerney predicted in January that the company would have to cut 10,000 employees this year through attrition and layoffs. 4,500 of those were scheduled to come from the Commercial Airplanes Unit, but Boeing Spokesman Dan Beck would not say if these most recently-announced cuts were part of that overall plan.

Boeing employs nearly 70,000 people in defense systems company wide. They produce military aircraft as well as weapons systems, surveillance, and intelligence systems.
