Gone West: EAA Founding Member Leo Kohn

Became The Organization's First Official Photographer

Another person closely linked with EAA's history and growth passed away earlier this month. Leo Kohn (EAA 4), one of EAA's founding members, died on Friday, January 17, at the age of 87.

Leo had the foresight to take photos at EAA's first meeting in Milwaukee on January 26, 1953, and soon became EAA's first official photographer.

Leo later became the organization's first full-time employee, maintaining the connection with EAA members and chapters while Paul Poberezny was still working full-time for the Wisconsin Air National Guard. Leo was a well-regarded aviation photographer and historian throughout his career, mostly recently serving as a director of the Mitchell Gallery of Flight Museum in Milwaukee.

According to an obituary posted online by the Krause Funeral Home in Milwaukee, WI, Leo is survived by his son William Kohn; daughter Mary Ellen Kohn-Buday; brothers Norbert and Victor Kohn; grandsons Robert and Jamieson Kohn. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, two brothers, and a sister.
