FAA Issues SAIB For Winter Rotorcraft Operations

Snow And Ice Ingestion Continue To Be A Factor In Accidents

As a continued emphasis on rotorcraft and icing conditions, the FAA has posted a Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin (SAIB) directed at owners and operators of turboshaft-powered rotorcraft, of the possibility of inflight engine loss of power due to the ingestion of ice and/or snow. Accumulation of ice and/or snow can occur in the area of the airframe engine inlet while the rotorcraft is on the ground or in the air.

A federal court has awarded $430,000 to Joseph Skilken and Co. following an accident involving a Cessna 441 after work on the airplane was performed by Oxford aviation of Maine. A portion of the tail of the airplane separated from the aircraft in flight, forcing an emergency landing in June that many said should have resulted in the fatal injury of Steven Skilken and five other people on board the aircraft.
